MX5, E30/E36 BMW - try and get the 1.8 16v if you're going cheap.

Either way, weld the diff, job jobbed.

1st drift car has to be a volvo no doubt about it,it will last forever seems you are going to crassh it

my mate had a 1.6 mx5 and tbh i thought it was crap not enuff power

EDIT: the volvo will probly need a bigger lump in it as they weigh tons as it is,1.8 16v f7p lumps used alot :)

MR2's aren't suitable, they are well balanced and only tend to step out when pushed too hard, added to the rear engineness means they pendulum a lot more than anything else.

dont get an mr2 they are rwd but mid engined which isnt good for drifting, as said above get an old ford, mx5 or e30 or e36 bmw, volvo 340s are an o.k. starter but get them up to a decent amount of power requires effort, alot of people put clio engines in them

also get yourself onto driftworks, they can help you lots

his profile says hes 17.. good luck insuring the other cars mentioned apart from the 340. 340s are cheap, and go sideways. do it

16v's ain't a lot of good due to where the power is in the range, the 2.5/2.8 would be a much better choice.

The Volvo is kinda a myth because its lack of power will make it harder to drift, a welded diff will help but only a engine swap will make it a competent drift car.

Ford sierra's are still available for a few hundred quid and it should be easy enough to find performance parts and upgrades for them cheaply too

Not really my point (see what I quoted) but they've got plenty of power for drifting anyway. Cheap to buy, relatively cheap to insure, plentiful supply of cars and parts and still a great chassis. This was actually not the 1.6, but the same driver in a 1.8, which gives you some idea.

An MX-5 would certainly be a better entry level drift car than a Volvo 340. The Volvo has its gearbox in the back!

Is it even being used on the road? Run what you brung drift events are becoming more and more common these days, if it was just being trailerd to places like that then theres no need for it to even be road legal.

A couple of us have been on about doing this for a bit of fun and just chopping in for A cheap little nail to rag to death

Incorrect, 318is didnt come with a limited slip diff as standard, they where a costly extra.

I've had an e36 318IS mtech without an LSD, there ok and drift perfectly well in damp/wet conditions. but in the dry the inside wheel spins 50% of the time.

The 2.0 6 cylinder e36's are pointless, so lazy. Id personly get a 318is but ones which have the diff are pricey let alone ones without.

Volvos are a pain to drift in the dry with standard engines, you'd probably kick it out on a roundabout for a few seconds.

BMW is the way forward, theres nothing like hearing a stright 6 hitting the limiter while looking through the side window

as some may know i have not long had an e30 316 touring as my daily car while working on the polo, its brilliant on fuel but still has just about enough guts to have some fun in the wet, which is great for learning the basics of drifting as i have found out, get an lsd or weld the diff and it will drift even better, but it doesnt have enough power to go remotely seideways in the dry! for anybody wondering its a brilliant 112hp when new!...

but because it is a really late touring it already has the 51mm shocks and rear discs and all the other gubbins ready for transplanting a much bigger engine, a 3.5 6cyl from an e34 5 series in my case

i held out and picked mine up for a snip at £300, although you should be expecting about a grand for something in the same condition as mine

insurance wise when i renewed the polo it was £650 in july and when i recently swapped the bmw to the main car they wanted an extra £350 and thats at 21 with 2 years ncb and a license for 4 years this coming april
