Hence why I like my 20vT golf which caters for a bit of both with some fun thrown in as well.

I was just surprised by how slowly the BMW revved, being a 16v and all the cars I had owned before that were 8v's and they revved up a lot more quickly.

my mate has just got rid of his 6n2 (justnikk on here) and has got himself a Eunos Roadster (imported mx5)

If you are thinking of it as a hot hatch then yes i agree with you. As i said its a good every day car whether it be cruising up the motorway or going to the shop to get milk.

A lot of people would say a pikey mk2 with an afh stuck in it is pathetic, depends what you want from a car. (i personally like your car but I'm just going by the same reasoning you appear to have)

Whilst you can drift a fwd car if you have the minerals to do it without letting it spin, you can't do it for long, as it's only drifting whilst it scrubs off momentum.

For this topic i think the car in question needs to be rear drive. Best car i ever drove for driving sideways was a Carlton GSi3000 24v.

Never been in an E36 318 but I was on the verge of buying an E46 318 until I took it for a test drive. It was the most dull experience ever, it took forever to get through the rev range and wouldn't even spin the wheels from standing on a gravelly road with the traction control off.

If you're considering a beemer, test drive one first. I could not get on with the stupid throttle pedal they have, having always been taught to use your toes on the throttle for more feel, it shows that BMW's are generally made for reps to cruise up the motorway in.

I thought my old 318 was pretty quick once it was past about 3.5k if you kept it up there

you just have to learn how to drive them

agreed, i thought my 318is was pretty nippy considering its a 1.8 in a big car, plenty of power to spin the wheels, like doug said - keep it up in the higher rev range and it flys.

I prefer the flat accelerator in bmws, when going sideways its easier to control your throttle imo.

edit: patchB, if your e46 was a pre 2002 model it would have been a 8v with 116bhp, if it was a 318i 16v it would have only been 1 second slower than your golf

But that's the problem, it is supposed to be a hot hatch, so if you look at it in the context its supposed to he looked at then its pathetic. Don't get me wrong once they've been tuned its a different story, my mates got a bora with about 200bhp and its a a bit of a weapon to say the least, but in standard 150 trim in a heavy mk4 its very disappointing seens as its got a gti badge on the back and a turbo'd lump up front.

Probably a good job my mk2 isn't running a afh then really or I would run the risk of people thinking it was pathetic

try driving the mk4 2.0 GTI, I actualy think it was more dull than a mk3 8v gti

The mk4 GTI platform was uterly shit from the start, come on.....a 10second GTI diesel

If you're trailering to the track and insurance isn't a problem.. E36 m3s are dirt cheap for what they are now, 3k upwards for a straight six 3.2 with a LSD that's practically locked as started.

Mx5 any day, I've recently bought a 1.6 mk1 import with a viscous diff, never had so much fun in a car before. They may lack a little in power, but you honestly don't need much. I'm always on the eye out for an empty car park or roundabout haha
