Hi peeps, i've had a search and a look through the faq in this section and can't seem to find anything relating. I'm trying to fit a new ignition switch on my 99 6n. I've stripped most of the column off and can see the switch in it's housing. There's a screw buried in the housing holding the switch on, how the hell do i get to it? the lock housing feels very tight and i can't get it off due to the bearing on top of the column. if i spread it open anymore it's going to snap. So whats the knack? Googling i've found mk3 golf fitment but the screw seems to be visible? Any help appreciated. :)

Can you confirm what you are trying to replace, the lock cylinder or the electrical switch assmebly?

Most lock cylinders need to be released by drilling the retainer out, a security screw is used to fix the replacement, perhaps this has been done before and the screw is what you can see?

I'm trying to replace the electrical switch assy. The retaining screw isn't visible. will get some photos later.

i know exactly what your on about mate. I've done quite a few at work.. how far have you got? you need a puller of some sort to pull off the flange bit on the column that is infront of the assembly.. (there is a spring between it and the assembly.. i presume your at that point.. you can chisel that part off but is an arsehole to do.. and i have a handmade puller just for the job. once that is off, the bit that you are prising open needs to be tapped off the column itself.. once off, the screw is visable.

i started stripping it yesterday, but ran out of daylight. Not touched it today, too ahem, rough lol. Is the flange piece mega tight then? i have a couple of pullers so i'll see how i get on tommorow. Needs to be done tommorow as i need it for work on tues :-)

So i've given up for today, I can't remove the aluminium housing in order to access the switch. Will wait for tps open tommorow so i can order a new housing. What a nightmare just to replace the switch!

As you can see, the switch is wedged up tight against the column, you can't even see the grub screw that holds the switch in place.

will update this thread when i've ordered the housing.

In the top left of the first picture, that is the flange that you need to remove with either a puller or a chisel!! It's a right pain to get off unless you have a decent puller. Once that is off, the spring will come off and then allows you to tap off that housing. Hope this helps
