1.8t 20v + AWD.... what parts?

Featured Replies

I'm just doing a little bit of research for a project I'm going to be starting and i want some advice and information if anybody can help me...

I'm planning on doing a 1.8 20v turbo with a all wheel drive system but i am unsure of what parts i need to build up the awd system to go with the engine.

if anyone could help me out with what parts i will need and where or what vehicle i can get the parts from it would be much appreciated

cheers

Matt

Might be worth seeing if you can get something that's CAT C / D and cannibalising it for the 4WD system as getting the parts separately could get costly

If it was me I'd be nicking the running gear off a mk2 golf synchro!

Then again, i'd rather save the hassle and just stick a 20vt in a golf synchro, would save a lot of ballache.

its what i had in mind jon because i can then sell of everything i dont need and hopefully i will get some money back then but its the linking the 1.8t with a awd system, I've seen the golf 4 motion which is a 2.8 v6 but is it possible for me to just swap the engine over is it that easy........

do you know ay golf synchro's going cheap ?

and its not for a golf thats the other problem its a build from ground up kind of project

Syncro's are fairly weak tho ain't they? It's only what I've read so have no personal experience, but it seemed to be that they would fit rallye running gear to cope with decent power

I'm going to need a strong system as its going to have a tuned 1.8t linked to it I had thought of a r32 engine and awd system but that's a lot more expensive than I had in mind for the project and its why the idea of a tuned 1.8t awd set up came into my mind, I inow the engine side of things but I'm just unsure of what I need for the awd running gear and what car I can get it off

Hmmm.. Impreza? Can buy em cheap an they're always being crashed/ scrapped

Or an audi 90 quattro..

Whats it going into? S3s are getting cheap, i dont think they're proper AWD though.

20vT passat has 4 motion system. Only issue the engines facing the wrong way.

Will a 1.8t link with up a scobby awd system

The s3 has the engine that I want due to it being a 1.8t 20v already producing 220bhp so gives me a good base to start from, and what its going into is the other matter really as its going into a mk2f polo the front end is having a space frame built up to replace what is there at the moment which will join though the bulkhead and follow into the space frame inside the car which will be the roll cage and then going tho to the back it will also support new suspension and the rear diff

When you mean the wrong way I'm guessing you mean it longitudinal and not transverse?

Find syncro running gear. Front and rear track will be considerably wider. I have to say, obviously everyone worries about cost, but if you are going to do this, i wouldnt keep track or try to keep it on a budget as it'll never stick to it.

Syncro conversion in to a mk3 isnt easy, but it can sound as easy as this..

Cut out spare wheel well

Move fuel tank to inside boot

Use mk2 syncro rear subframe, diff, trailing arms, etc etc

Mount new subframe using custom adapter plates in original position and weld the diff hanger mount to the boot floor

Cut out exhaust tunnel and replace with passat syncro, golf etc etc

Cut and fabricate front firewall/bulkhead to accommodate new gearbox and transfer box

Get custom propshaft made up

Cut/shut weld in front subframe mounts etc

Strengthen everything!

New gear linkage depending on which box you use

Custom exhaust to suit with the AWD gear underneath

etc etc

The list goes on.

Syncro gear will be cheapest, you can make adapter plates to use the rear beam out of a syncro and then if you really like you can use a haldex rear diff with some modification to the diff hanger on the frame.

Custom shafts wont be cheap and is the next big expense i would have thought.

Mind you, i've only considered it briefly before deciding it wasnt worth it so dont take what i say as gospel!

Good luck!

Well the cars going to have a internal space frame to make all the new mounts and stuff and how about just ripping apart a audi s3 or something which has the 1.8t plus 4 motion system to get me the awd I want ?

You've stolen my idea lol but I'm using the afh engine and mk2 golf syncro box and rear diff for mine and also space framing the whole car too, I have a full 15 point roll cage to build the rest of the frame off and should be getting a box and diff in the next month. I'm going to cut out the whole floor pan except chassis rails in the car and make a framed floor and then using mk1 golf front sus for the rear with all mounting points onto the frame, new floor will have a big tranny tunnel for prop and exhaust to fit in and think I'm going minimal interior and going so save weight as much as poss and also widen the track to try and run standard driveshafts.

Good going, will certainly deal with the power of a forced AFH better than an 085. Are you using a different bottom end to bolt up to the syncro 02 type box or having an adapter made up?

I thought about this, spoke to my fabricator and its possible, but i'd want to keep stock track width front and rear, which meant custom shafts all round as well as complete custom rear beam. At the end of the day, as much as i love my polo, the challenge of making a "small" block stupidly fast, by the time i had done all that i could have bought an r32 and blown that! So FWD is staying I'm afraid

I'm going to widen the track and have carbon fiber front wings and widen the back with either a carbon panel or use sheet metal

pete are you using your bready which you had at gti fest??

Yes the bready mate it goes into my garage start of march for rebuild il be at rr day I hope as its last proper venture as is

You need to watch engine height as well mate its either bonnet hump or sump issues with that engine that's why I'm staying with the afh and I may dry sump it for extra clearance but mine will be on air anyways as I'm planning on laying frame with raised custom turrets for mk1 golf adjustable race top mounts front and maybe rear. As for wide track il just weld on wider arches front and rear. I already have the space frame designed I see that as the easy part lol But that's just me

yuh i know about the height of the engine due to it being a tall block engine i was planning on having it raised a little and as I'm having carbon bonnet i can mess about with it as i need, how have you designed the space frame as i need to sort mine out i had in mind starting with a standard roll cage and then working my way out from there? arch wise I'm going with carbon so that its lite, i didn't want to start welding more metal on. I've not decided what suspension I'm going to go with or how I'm going to do it as i want to work out what I'm doing about the awd system first but either way its going to be as low as i can get it without any problems, I'm not going to be using it on the road just the track and drag strip I'm building it to go as fast as i can get it, if i see 13 - 12 on my first time out with it then that great but eventually want to get to at least 10, if i can get sort of on par with its golf counter part it would be a outstanding success. I'm going to us my coupe I'm currently driving when it comes off the road in April and then insure my new car its not likely to be finished in 2012 more like 2013 but if i can bring it out a play earlier i promise it will be :)

You dont really want to go stupidly low if its for track use as this can hinder handling. Unless of course your redesigning the suspension to work at such low ride height

I was going to say best bet is an S3 donor as it's the complete package you're after, obviously it'll require modification but it's a base to start with, that said they aren't cheap...

The 2.8 VR6 MK4 Golf you mention has the same Haldex based AWD system as in the S3 (and the TT Quattro) but obviously you'll need to get hold of the engine separately, however they can be had for well under £2k if you find someone desperate to sell or find one that's been crashed, if you have the time/space there is potential to make most of that back selling all the parts you don't need (including the engine)

the old top mounts are going to be removed and new ones are going to be welded in as part of the space frame to make sure the car is solid i want to go low without being stupidly low

i have seen a good amount of 2.8 v6 mk4 golfs for sale with the 4motion in them which i looked at but the obverse problem was the engine how easy is it to mount the 1.8t engine with the transmission system from the 2.8 v6 mk4 golf ?
