Do you own an angle grinder?

Sadly he is correct.

Otherwise is a Phil j kit.

Coillies are silly expensive for mk1/2/3s :(

so I would leave as is save the money by not lowering it to use for the coillies.

Well people have been saying about cut springs but i know if they are done 'Properly' it can be done safely to a certain extent, but I'm not sure...

What is a phil j kit, I've seen somthing about them in the FAQ section but the link didnt work

I know they are very expencive, i almost got a set for myy girlfriends pug 306 (which was my little project before i passed my test and got the polo) for just over £150, its all down to a sill hub design or strut design isnt it, thats why you cant get cheaper kits

Ye. The strut design is To blame.

The Phill j kits are sold on here under Jackson tuning for static drop, think he does budget coillies as well.

cut One or two coils and a few cable ties is the trick normally. Mcloving is still here and despite what people say a kitten isn't killed every time you cut a spring.

Say i did cut the springs how much would 2 coils lower it approximatly

On the front? Approx 50mm. Personally i wouldn't cut more than that, but of the people i've known to do it, they're all still alive and free.

In fact, cars without uncut springs crash the most.

For good stance, cut the same amount from the back as the front. Unless you like it looking like a labrador squeezing one out in the woods.

That mcuh mikey? Each coil is roughly 10mm and they are coil bound on the bottom 2-3 coils, so i would have thought it would have been closer to 20mm for two coils.

You can get a set of shocks and springs for about £120 on ebay.

And there's always a second hand set being sold on here

I think he's on about standard springs? In which case, two full coils is enough to get a loose spring, and put you over 40mm down.

You're on about aftermarket springs if you're talking about those where the bottom 2-3 coils all meet when compressed. These vary, so there's no way to know without seeing the spring with the car's weight on it.

Incidentally, i did that to a pair of 40mm springs, one coil took them to 50mm without affecting ride/handling, which was nice, but it did mean i had a loose spring and they wouldn't get through an mot - chances are, neither will a factory spring with two full coils, but i have passed an mot with 1.5 coils.

I'v got a coil out on mine, and its a little loose when jacked. These were aftermarket, -40mm

Didnt know two coils would dump it so much

come to rolling road day and buy a set of springs off me for £20, or i have a front pair for £10. I'm not posting il leave them in the parts box otherwise.

both are the same and i think they are 60/40 i maybe wrong

What's the crack with chopping lowering springs id like to go a bit lower on the front but as you say there's a couple of coils wound closely together - can I just sack them off?

since when have you failed an mot for having loose springs? i swear weve covered this? aslong as the spring reseats in the correct position when the car is lowered back down it should be a pass.

Matt: best thing to do is to see what your coils are like with the weight on the car. If the coils are touching/stacked then removing them with just lose you that much height i.e coils are 10mm dia, 2 are touching therefore removing these will cause a drop of 20mm. However, if they are seperated a bit, you will lose more height i.e the coil diameter plus the 'gap' above it. Have a look and you should be able to work it out.

Awesome thanks alot mate, do there not there to add support to the spring or anything silly? 20mm will be more than enough I'm thinking as speed bumps keep knocking me out of gear as it is ..

that shouldnt be happening.... lol

Haha I know lol! I say keep happening 3-4 times knocking me in neutral hitting fear linkage maybe?

Doesnt chopping the springs change the springs compression rate (if you get what i mean?)

I dont think its measure how many coils you want to chop of and it will got that low.

But usualy when something becomes shorter the harder it is to bend/break/squash.

that shouldnt be happening.... lol

Happens to mine all the time 8-)

but yours is a 16v. it tries to pop into a higher gear to get MOAR POWA

but yours is a 16v. it tries to pop into a higher gear to get MOAR POWA

wrong the revs will drop so less POWA and surely if your going over a bump changing up a gear must be annoying
