mk4 golf TDI temperature and fuel guages arnt working

Featured Replies

If you change the covks , illuminated needles ftw!

Also iirc the 202 ground point is near the fusebox. And the cables from the clocks run to the fusebox. Could be a dodgy connection.

ahh i see, thanks. I'm off to my mums mates now as I've had no joy today so will see if he can have a look at it. i have the wireing diagram.

speaking to him earlier he thinks the garage put 24v through it when they did the cambeltto start it and thinks the clocks have blown. he said something about a voltage regulator for the clocks to keep them at a steady voltage lower than the alternator (10v) and thinks they blew that

off to a scrappy to look for clocks too

If they had put 24v through it there would of been more damage than the voltage stabiliser popping it's clogs! the engine ecu and the rest of the speedo would of gone kaput as well.

The voltage stabiliser might of just died, those voltage check I suggested would of proved this, I doubt if that ground 202 is at fault, as if it were there would be more malfunctions with the speedo & tacho plus the warning lights as 202 is the main earth for all the clocks functions.

I've just popped the back off a set of 98 polo clocks and as I said yesterday the warning buzzer is soldered to the main circuit board.

lol thats what DG's said too :p they did say they think its the clocks but i dont have another set to try it with, I'm not paying 30 quid for some petrol ones to test the guages when i cant actualy use them, none of the local scrappys have deisel ones.

do you know much about coding clocks in? from the looks of it i have a non-can car but if i have to get new clocks id like some with the lcd screen in with mpg etc.

oh and ill try the voltage tests later as my mums mates out atm :)

I could do with a set of replacement clocks for mine (they're cracked) so if you do get the petrol ones to test yours with and no longer want / need them after your testing, i'll take them off you (if you're willing to post as i don't really fancy an 108 mile drive!)

Edit - also, what functionality did the £30 clocks cost? were they just 'basic' ones?

I've got a set of 98 polo clocks but they only have the Blue connector, I've had a look at the connector pin allocation tables and they are the same as yours, so you could hang them in and see?

There are plenty of clocks on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-...=item256991d5ee Is just one of many £22.99 free p&p

actualy i have some 96 polo clocks, older i know but if the blue conections the same it might get the guages to move.

ytea seen a few sets on there but if i can i want to get the mpg functions enabled, but as i have a non can bus (whatever that is) it may not work, so if not ill get the cheaper standard style ones

The 96 polo clocks have a different connector, it's only a 28 pin you need the ones with the fuel & temp gauge in the centre top and not at the bottom like on the 96 clocks

Changing to the CAN bus clocks (Car Area Network) you might find other functions don't work like the speedo and tacho as they will be looking for the digital info on the can bus from the ecu and your ecu does'nt support the can bus!

ahh yea they dont have that, didnt think of that lol.

any way to see fit hey will work without buying a set? dont wanna waste money on them if they wont (some said they will on other peoples threads as its a deisel)

If you get no voltage in those tests, it's a fair bet that it is the voltage stabiliser inside the clocks that has failed, but it could still be a wiring issue from the clocks to the sensors but as it's both it again comes back to the clocks have failed.

you can try these clocks of mine to prove the system

yea thats what the vdub garage here said, ill get my mums mate on them tests and see what he says, if not ill try to find some more info on if bus clocks will work and if they do ill get a set of bora sport ones or something. if not, ill get any old clocks.

next time I'm around mk or your in wellingborough i owe you a drink or 2 mate :)

just got back from my mums mates, hes multimetered it for me.

1st did the fuel sensor plug, black probe earthed to car, red probe on each of the 2 pin bits. the purpley colour 1 i think is the live was jumping from 0.04-0.13 and the whitey brown one i think is the earth was jumping around 0.05-0.9 ish.

2nd was the coolant level sensor and the same sort of story again with it jumping about, no steady power feed to it.

any ideas?

That would tend to indicate the voltage stabiliser in the clocks has died, If your around tomorrow I could pop over with these 98 polo clocks to prove for certain?

i am but i dont wanna put you out mate, its not really round the corner lol . I'm gonna pop down the scrappy and see if the nice polish man there will lend me the petrol golf clocks before the owner arrives, ill fit them there and see what happens.

this way ill also know if i can use a trip comp set as the ones there have the MPG screen, if the revs move when i start it (before the imob cuts it out) then it should work fine so i can get the better clocks :)

if all else fails ill get a normal set. do you have a vagcom? ill happily give you some cash to recode my clocks if i get more :)

I have vagcom but it's not the full paid for version so I can read fault codes but not do any re-programming, one of the site sponsors is based in Northampton and they offer vagcom services http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=266072

same as me, i actualy know that guy i think so will have a word with him. cheers mate :) if u need any bits for a mk4 polo give me a shout, i have bits coming out of my ears from my last one i broke :p lights, interior etc :)

urekia :) clocks are wanked not the earth... (ignore the fuel guage, i just have no deisel in the car lol)

also these had the trip computer (one in the clocks) and when i started the car the revs did go up before the imob cut it out so i think ill be ok with a set with the computer on :)

Good news I've sent you a PM with the wiring diagrams
