I was just wondering what people used in there car and what grades and why? I use to use Castrol EDGE 5w-30 (507 00 spec) and Mobil 1 0w-40, but now I've changed to Motul 300V (Double Ester) 5w-30 because the TBN number is almost twice as good as EDGE and the Viscosity Index is high. My car has 209k on the clock and its still on the original engine/turbo/gearbox and clutch! Not bad for a driving school car...

More importantly, how often do you replace the oil? Unipart's own brand oil is Fuchs. £14 for 5 litres of fully synthetic.

Anything that's 505.01 It's not necessary to use any other oil than one that conforms to this.

I try and get Quantum PD (Quantum Platinum 5w40) as it's the one VW dealers use.

if you look on tdiclub.cpom there is alot of debates about 505.01. many people have used castrol edge turbo diesel 50501 and its destroyed there cams. loads are running on non 50501. i stick to 50501 though. replace the oil once a year theres no need to do it every 3 or 4 months its just a waste. if you wanna be sure get an oil analysis done

I've got a Polo 1.4TDI (9no) on a 2003 year with an AMF engine mate. I've used Castrol EDGE (5w-30 507 00 spec) but now on the 300V juice :-)

I change my oil every 6-10k. I didn't know that Uniparts oil was Fuchs (Silkolene) nice heads up on that one mate :-)

Quantum oil is made by Castro (EDGE) for VW

Bloody hell, just looked up how much that stuff is...£15 a litre? How many oil changes do you do a year? 3? 4? That's a lot of money to spend on oil. It's a bit like putting optimax in a reliant robin. It won't do any harm but you're kinda throwing money away. If the TBN is so good and it's long life oil you shouldn't need to change it so often, at least that way the costs balance out a bit better.

One of the reasons why 'm using this oil is I mamaged to get it for £8 for 2L! A guy was selling a rook of the stuff so i bought all the 40+ Ltrs that he had for sale as well as the Top of the range gear oils. Happy days mate :-D
