So the polo will be going in the next few weeks as I can't afford to insure it. However I have been offered a swap for an ex magazine featured 1991 mini city with a 1.3 conversion. It was fully restored back in 2010 by autostyl in Cornwall which included a new front end, all rust treated and a full windows out respray. It's also lowered on 6x10 mini steels but the deciding factor is insurance is half the price with all mods declared

However I know next to nothing about them so what do you lot reckon? Any opinions welcome as long as you actually have something to back it up with

Easy to work on (just a little fiddly at times), parts are readily available, plenty of mods to be done.

Also, you've not been in a convoy until you've been in a mini convoy. Its a strange feeling, where you generally cant stop smiling

I never get this with a VW convoy. But that could just be me lmao.

The only experience I have with them is when my good friend had one, I was number one passenger haha.

All I can tell you is they enjoy rusting but that doesn't really apply to this, being restored an' all.

Oh and the 4 speed box is apparently quite bad for motorway driving. But I can't be so sure on that myself.

It's a '91 that's had a new front panel and a van/ pick up grill welded in place

Do it mate, i've got a 92 cooper, and they are LUSH! and sooo easy to work on, parts are super cheap, and they look cool :-D

Yeahh I've noticed how cheap parts are, only thing that puts me off is unreliability and how "old" the interior is, it's got after market leather seats etc but it's just so basic and empty

I wouldn't think twice mate, nothing gives you the smiles like a mini and it looks like they have done all the hard work for you.

Depends what you are going to use it for. That looks too good to be used every day for me. I wouldn't fancy doing loads of miles in one or bombing up and down motorways in one all the time either but the couple that I've driven were brilliant fun.

Minis are proper cool, far from the most refined car in the world but if you can live with that then I'd go for it. I never drove the one I had as I hadn't passed my test so can't say from personal experience on the reliability but my mum never had any issues with hers. As said tho if any thing does go wrong they are so simple to work on and you can buy pretty much any part you need straight off the shelf

My mums chaps just picked up a mini van, it needs restoring but its cool as fuck, just sitting in it put a massive grin on my face

This one has an engine and is a runner, does need body work but it looks like a good base from what I've seen of it

Hahaa nope not too nosey at all, he doesn't want any cash, just my car and a few other bits including my Borbet atiwes, but they wouldn't fit the mini anyway so no huge loss...

Also can anyone in the know shed some light on the suspension set ups as this is the first time I've heard of the term hi-Los, trumpets, cones?

I assume this is nothing like the conventional shock and spring design?

There are no springs. Its a bit odd, i dont know the proper terms for it

They use shocks and these big rubber cones.

You can get replacements for the rubber cones in the form of springs, but they are expensive (or were 3/4 years back).

hi-low's IIRC are some sort of topcap like thing that allows you to adjust? I could be wrong, its been some years since I've had anything to do with minis.
