Hi guys

I'm running Phil j shocks ( came with a -60mm kit) -80mm springs and -10mm bonrath top mounts.

I'm not too happy with its look and would like the front down another 10-20mm, so ny plan is to cut a coil off. I know its a bit of a s**t storm asking this buy what are peoples opinions? Where to I stand legally? Is it safe? What about mot's?

As far ad I'm aware thw only problem with cutting springs is doing it to excess to the point where they rattle when the car is jacked up?

What you all think?

As far as I know chopping coils is far from legal, and like you said if it rattles around the strut when jacked then I believe it wont pass the MOT.

New springs are cheap as chips so I would personally just buy a new set, but there will be plenty of people that have cut springs and reckon it's fine.

Aslong as it doesn't move around when jacked up, then its all good.

Go for it, but be warned, you will just end up sat on bumpstops lol.

Is it the act of actaully cutting the springs thats illegal? Or just that in most cases it causes the spring to rattle on the strut?

I would get a new set of springs but tbh I haven't seen a set of -100mm springs, could any one point me in the right direction to get some? Or are coil overs the only next sensible option?

yes, coilovers are the only other option really.

Kiz is making MK1 golf conversions for a reasonable price, capable of lows of about 120 or more with helpers out :)

Problems you start encountering then though is the driveshaft hitting the chassis leg and the TCA hitting the body.

Would be alright at 100 down id say though.

moving round when jacked up is fine, as long as the spring reseats itself in the correct position when lowered back down

It's legal. Cutting it has nothing to do with it.

The spring being lose when jacked up and not properly reseating will fail an MOT. You could fit lowering springs that were too short for your dampers and have the same issue, they've not been chopped.

A lot of lowering springs have a couple of weaker progressive coils, keeps the spring tight when jacked up but collapse to nothing under weight of car.

if your springs come loose, an easy fix its to put a lil tack weld to keep it in place, or some people use old fashoined cable ties :)

mine were fine on the mot, and they come loose

CUT YOUR COILS MAN, BE FREEE. Just do it properly, try half a coil first/see how much tension is on them when you strip them
