gear box problems or i have been scammed, cant find 5th in a 1.3 cl!

Featured Replies

Basicly bought my first mk3 the other day after years of wanting. Its great, but on the drive home i tryed to slot it into 5th and had a few problems which at the time i thorght i must of already been in it or something. But today I've been in the car with same problem then sat it on my drive and actualy put and checked for each gear slot and i cannot find 5th evan though i know its soppose to have one being that its the 1.3 and its displayed on the gear knob.

So basicly is there something wrong with my gear box, i mean the gear stick does seem to be angles a little toward the drivers side but I'm guessing this is meant to be like this. Or Have i been sold a 1.1 and been had off  or well i dont know any advise would be great. Thanks

Also if there was any quick or obvious way of spotting the machanical difference between a 1.1 and a 1.3 spec that would be ideal. Because any one can change a badge which is what worries me that most.

Thanks everyone

you could have a 4 speed with a 5 speed knob!

your gear stick should be central also iirc you can identify a 5 speed by the casing at the end of the gearbox

if its pressed steel its a 5 speed, if its aluminium its a 4 speed.

The linkage is probably not aligned properly, you can do it in 5 mins from under the car

Pretty sure that some 1.3's are 4 speed from the factory. Unless he told you it was a 5 speed I'm not sure how he could of scammed you?

i have a 1.3 and its only 4 speed. again though had a prang in it and it wouldnt go inton 1st and 2nd just equired some adjustments to the gear linkage
