Looking for some advice from the younger members who I hope will be a bit more computer savvy than me!! I still use a VHS!!! not a Betamax! and as of 15 days ago I now quallify for Saga insurance mega cheap!!!

I have just received via ebay a HP Pavilion DV7 laptop, and looking through the original spec it was available with a BlueRay player, mine came with a DVD rw lightscibe player, can I just replace the drive with a Blueray device and will I need additional software? it's running win 7 Ultimate 64bit or would I be better off getting a standalone external BlueRay USB device?

You could just replace the internal drive (if you can send me the serial / manufacturers part code for the laptop, i'll have a look and see if i can find one for you) and you wouldn't need any new software (it may need the drivers which tell the drive how to communicate with the machine but it should automatically find them on windows 7)

if you wanted a solution you could use on more than 1 machine, you could go external but it does mean carrying extra cabling etc with you

I would pefer to make it an internal setup, as that laptop has an HDMI output so I can play it on my TV, but my other one does'nt, so I could only watch it in low def on a 13" screen if I went for the stand alone unit?

Ok, that's not shown on my works website but it might be on our internal system so i'll have to check that on Monday. (i'm not in sales so i'm not looking to sell you anything)

If the other one doesn't have HDMI, what other outputs do you have on the machine and what inputs does your TV have?

If you've got VGA in on your TV (as long as your laptop graphics card supports it) VGA can output over 1080p so you could still watch HD with both an internal and external drive

(i hope this makes sense as i'm a bit drunk at the moment)

Having a quick look the part number for the Bluray drive (509421-001) states it is compatible with your model laptop.

Should be a very easy and quick pop the current one out and the new one in job and you'd be good to go.
