Babyblue 16v Loon

Featured Replies

Ok so its almost 2 years overdue but i'm finally going to start my build thread now that i'm converting the Loon to AFH :) Gonna take yall back prior to the respray as this is probably where it starts to get half decent...

So back in July 2011 I prepped the whole car... on my street... first time doing a full car so don't expect perfection but I was pretty pleased with results!

Wanted to tidy up the bay to compliment the new paintjob, did this before all the prep work. 6n engine cover with splash effect fun :) polished rocker cover and a giant lamp shade air filter for the horny 8v. Oh and relocated washer bottle (a common mod i went for corsa b bottle)

Its alot harder working backwards... trying to remember what I did and in what order. Got into top 15 at the 2010 Hulloween Cruise with FastnModded which I was not expecting :)

After that worked on the interior, new seats from a mk4 GTTDI Golf. Had to shorten the rear legs to fit them to polo runners.

Swapped my cherrybomb system for a full stainless 2" catback (thanks Pattt :-D )

Sorry for 4 posts in a row for those i'm annoying, I haven't worked out how to do this properly yet...

But now for the good bit, picked up my AFH the other night, I think it replaces my passenger seat quite nicely 8-) Now just to drag it into the house somehow until I get hold of a stand.

I intend to run this on the standard ECU with injectors as I want better fuel economy and reliability in winter. I'm sure you can set up carbs just as well but i can't... so thus i'll start playing untangle with loads of wiring pretty soon :(

If get too lost with it all I might resort to carbs.

Good to see a mk3 saloon, we need MORE pictures.

Some progress after finishing all my uni work today: Polished up cam cover and removed inlet manifold, throttle body, clutch and airbox ready for mk3 items and a lick of paint :)

Quite happy with today's progress. Also got front mount and alternator off, gearbox split and clutch and flywheel off the old lump ready to be bolted up to the AFH. Starting to look promising :D

Wheels and colour look good together!!

Thanks dude i've had this colour scheme in mind for a long time and finally put it to use with on my loon

What are they? Ultralites??

liking this mate, but for some reason i preferred it before it was sky blue :p

  • Author

Yeah ultralites just painted white.

Glad you like it, and I know often I wonder if it would of looked better in the old colour, but I've wanted a sky blue car since I was 16 and thought this was the perfect opportunity to try it out as it was getting treated for rust anyway. If I keep it for long enough I might re-do it in another colour

fair enough pal, still looks sick tho.

Been a while since an update but I've still been busy...

Had the old engine out and transferred what I needed onto the AFH.

Used my original alternator with a 6n pulley, seems to be more or less in line and turns the alt no problem when I turn the crank, but I guess time will tell... :/

Also swapped the mk3 flywheel and clutch over then mounted the gearbox. Received my 94 starter motor today thanks to Ray meaning its all ready to go in the bay now!

Got a fair bit done today, finally realized the importance of grinding your ARB mount down :p It works out twice as hard working backward bit its finally down to size, just removed the mount from the car to grind it. Also got driveshafts bolted up and AFH downpipe on the mainfold, which has brought the importance of G-blocks for the ARB to my attention... it won't clear!! :( I know some people haven't bothered with the blocks but how have they got around it? Hammer to their downpipes? :S

Never realised this was a loon, fucking love the colour

My down pipe was sitting on the arb in my mk3 and never gave any issues, it was the standard afh pipe though so had the flexi bit in it and had the heat shield around the pipe where it hits the arb so that may of acted like a cushion and helped prevent vibration

Did you put a slot into the mk4 alt pulley and use the woodrift key? Just mentioning it cause saf had the pulley fly off his and destroy his engine so its well worth doing if you haven't just to be safe

Thanks dude it certainly turns a lot of heads haha, which can get annoying but i didn't think about that when i sprayed it, just loved the colour as you do :)

How the hell did you get your roll bar back on with the downpipe? Its been shifted forwards on mine by the pipe and i can't get the bolts back aligned with the brackets to tighten things up, might just not be trying hard enough thought but i didnt want to bend it too much.

Nah i haven't used a woodrift key as i don't remember one even coming off my mk3 alt, so i just torqued the nut up against the mk4 pulley as tight as i could hoping that would hold it, kind of worries now :s What should the key look like?

Looks like this mate

The curved bit sits in a grove in the shaft and there is a slot missing in the pulley so it slots over it. The pulley is only alloy so its easy to cut the grove in to it, i just used a hack saw and a file

As for the arb, lift the engine a little so you can bolt the bar on the drop the engine down on to it, the weight of the engine will do all the hard work for you

I don't remember anything like this coming off the assembly, but will keep an eye out for it incase it fell out somewhere. Is there any chance my mk3 alt never had one, and if so will this effectively be the same as what i'm doing now, just running the pulley with the nut torqued up?

I'll try that for the ARB thanks, probably better to do this before getting her running least i know its ready for a test drive straight away :) That day seems to get further and further away thought the more I find out haha...
