Babyblue 16v Loon

Really losing enthusiasm for this wiring now. Stripped the loom down from the fusebox, leaving whats left in the second picture, but i've realised plugs for the fuel pump and ignition wiring (M and H1) arn't there so will have to connect these manually or source the plugs.

Also attempted splicing the main red cable from the mk4 fusebox into the black cable on the ignition switch, however now i'm not getting any power to anything, even when I took the splice out so it was back to normal I have no power :s Could be something to do with the big plug on the back of the mk3 fusebox not being properly pushed in but I can't get it on anymore than it is.

Oh and I have this plug coming from the main engine loom, its a 3 pin, no idea where its meant to go... :s

Also this is all I have going on with the immobiliser, as you can see its on my bed not sure if will quite work here, no wires going from this to anything that I can see on my loom, potential future problem to deal with...

Where on the fusebox are you putting this main red wire? If its to the double red plug bit this would go straight to the battery and connecting it up won't really do anything as you need a switched live (either from the cars ignition or by 'hot wiring' the mk4 ignition wires), you will get relays and shit clicking on the fusebox and fuel rail

I'll go out in a min and see if I can find a plug with those wires going to it in my bay

At the moment its going to the two pins in that red plug on the fusebox, leading to where i've spliced it into the ignition.

Ok thanks dude :) I'm tempted just to pay someone to sort it out for me haha, but i'm told sometimes car electricians arn't any better as its a bit of a custom conversion.

Is this the wire? Blk, blu/wht, grn/red?

Its got a brown, green/white and a black wire coming off it and goes to here on the engine loom, seperates just before the main plug (wire where my fingers are)...

Edited by mk3poloftw

The only wire I can find in that area with 3 wires on it is the one I took a photo of which hasn't been plugged into anything since I did the conversion, but those colours don't match the on you have. The only other 3 pin plug I can find is the coil one

Just had another look and the photo I sent you by pm of the coil has the wrong plug on it, must of taken that photo before realising it was the wrong one (took those photos over 2 years ago now).

The correct coil plug is this one, photo just taken on my mk2 so I know this is 100% correct as I've just driven home from work in it

IMAG1312.jpg

The one I sent you originally is the loose wire I posted a photo of a little further up

Just to show your not alone with spaghetti wiring this is when I did my first one...

Hmm well if yours isn't connected to anything I guess mine doesn't need to be either :)

Yeah think i'm using the correct coil pack one, where does the brown wire off that plug go to? I accidentally cut it previously so now i've just sent it to the battery negative.

Yeah thats pretty much how mines looking :p Much respect for having the patience to do this in a mk2 and mk3! I just want one working haha! Whats the splicing situation? Am i doing it right?

Yeah the brown just goes to earth mate

As for the splicing there really isn't a lot you can do until you get the right plug with the mk4 ignition wires on it. The wire from that big double red plug should go straight to the live on the battery but I haven't used it on mine. I did on my first conversion but when it fell off and every thing still worked as it should I fucked it off and never bothered with it on the mk2, higgo did the same on his mk1 too

Ah i see i'll leave that brown where it is then.

Ah right i see so i've spliced completely the wrong wire in haha. I'll connect it to the battery for now but if its like you say i might not need it. really need to sort those ignition wires out then, might just use random cable on the correct pins, i don't see why this wouldn't work? Theres 3 wires coming off the ignition plug on fuesbox, where do these go to on the mk3 ignition wiring?

r u gai wots wit teh colur...,,,,,..

Makes me want to put an engine back in my loon shell mate....need to sell it before I get any ideas  You still going with the colour scheme you suggested the other day? & make sure your mani bolts come off easily mate cos next time you're at mine i wouldn't mind decatting it haha, still have the lambda nut in the shed!

Haha Pat! I just woke up one day and thought you know what, today I really feel like looking bent, so sprayed it baby blue :)

Makes me want to put my engine in your loon shell, beat me to it mate, if i was you i'd keep it. Not sure about colours last thing on my mind right now, as for the decat don't worry because my new AFH downpipe has a stainless decat pipe with lamba boss welded in :D Just need to clamp the beastly stainless exhaust onto this now.

I can't keep it mate no room really :s there's already 3 of my cars on the drive plus the quad, then the rents cars haha. And also oli's golf will be in our yard soon aswell so defo need to make room!

Well can i suggest welding in some flanges for a piece of flexi hose mate? Would reduce vibrations and will mean its abit more flexible to push it up more. I can't remember how far up into the tunnel we got it to sit? I'm well looking forward to the engine note when you get it running :D are there any parts you need? Cos i think I'm off to upullit this weekend if I'm not down london. I probs should have gone last weekend cos i just spent a shit load on poly bushes and a new subframe/ steering rack etc lollll :L

  • Author

Ok theres the focus and the mk2, whats the 3rd? Or is that including the loon? Well the AFH downpipe has a flexible section, I was hoping this would be enough, exhaust is second priority at this stage haha, I just want it to run for now!

Ooo yes mate that would be a big help, i'm in need of a standard mk4 lamba sensor and cable, plus any fusebox/immobiliser parts you can fish out. Namely plugs H1 and N on the CE2 fusebox, might be mission to pull out but its all I need now.

Went fishing in a 6n and caught me some wires. Wires going from imob to the blue plug for the fusebox which I hope is all i need for this to work now? Red plug (H1) for the ignition wiring to be spliced or was wondering if i could maybe use the 6n barrel to make things easier... and black plug (M) for fuel pump live which I will be adding more wiring to but just makes this easier to attach to the mk4 fusebox and for future reference so i know the colours are right.

Hope this might help anyone else who's attempting this :)

Nice catch 8-)

The immob wiring should be pretty self explanatory now mate, 2 wires from immob to blue plug (is it black and grey?) 2 browns to earth, grey and white stripe is for the diagnostics port but you can leave this out if you like.

I'd imagine you could use the 6n ignition, might need a little modding but I can't imagine it would be too big a deal. You might be able to use just the ignition in your housing, or you may have to swap the housings over, never tried it tho so have no idea. You would still need to splice the two ignition wires together tho or you would just have the 6n fusebox working.

Pretty sure that your rev counter feed is on the blue plug too (double check on club gti tho). Red and black striped wire going into the back of your clocks just needs to be extended down to the correct wire on the fusebox (pretty sure that's red/black too).

  • Author

Yeah I see how the imob wiring works now :D

Nah think i'll just stick to what people have done and run with the mk3 plug, had a bit of progress today got power back, was just a plug on the mk3 fusebox not in properly as suspected :p

so i've spliced from H1 pin 1, 3 and 4 into my mk3 ignition, they were black, black/red and black/yellow just spliced into the same coloured wires on the mk3 loom.

Main problem i've realised is I have no relays on my fusebox, namely the ECU relay 3, I imagine this is a big problem and will source one... somehow. Any other relays I need? From the CE2 diagram it should just be this one.

Any ideas which plug the rev counter should go to on the mk4 fusebox... H1?

Aside from these few things its looking better! Starter motor is still only ticking however but I can only guess this is because the ECU isn't doing anything with the ignition?

Starter motor should have a permanent live coming straight from the batter (needs a good clean connection and nut to be done up secure), also need the engine to be well earthed (at least one strap from front mount to chassis leg and one from a starter motor bolt to other chassis leg). If you have both these and the starter still only clicks then you have a problem with your starter motor, try wacking it while a mate trys to turn it over (aim for the selenoid rather than the starter motor). Your defo getting a switched ignition live as its clicking when you try and turn it over. The ecu plays no part OMG this part of the wiring at all

Think the only relay you need is the fuel pump relay although can't remember off the top of my head which number that is. For the rev counter feel just check the faq mate

Also I don't think you would need to splice the red/black ignition wire as you are using the mk2f starter motor wiring making the same wiring on the 6n setup redundant

Yeah i'm testing with a multimeter, it should recieve near enough 12V when i turn the key but it only gets around 1.5V which suggests either a bad earth or motor nakered, or bad connection? The nut is up nice and tight but doing all this with the engine in is hard due to the bigger AFH, manageable though just takes ages. I have the front mount earth good, but only wires i have on the motor is the main power cable which goes on the thread and is secured by the bolt, then one of the solenoid connections, should there be an actual earth cable just for the starter? I was told they earth off the engine...

Well i've just bought a bunch of relays so i'll bang ECU and fue pump (think its 12) in and hopefully if i get the motor going she should fire up :D Or at least try to...

  • Author
It should only recieve a signal to switch the solenoid to 12v direct feed which should be on there. Theres 3 wires iirc, a signal wire (thin) a charge (thin) and a live from the B82REZ (thick). The switched live is a small current not 12v. The solenoid is a relay in affect. I believe

So the solenoid should read 12v when key is turned? Ah well all i have now is the ring crimp red wire (Ali G battery you refer to) and a female connection going onto the male solenoid connection (cloests to the block) which i'm assuming is the signal as she's trying to click, that thrid connection has nothing on as i can't find anything to go there despite remembering i took something off it, thats what i don't understand haha!

Well i feel pretty stupid now... found that 3rd connection which had been tucked away hidden behind firewall when i was trying to get the 16v in, goes through a little grommet down and to the left of the main loom grommet. Connected this up to the starter and now she's cranking over :) Feeling a lot closer to finished now, just need to get some relays and sort the fuel pump and with a bit of luck she'll fire up and be ready for Easter!

Cheers for the help though guys, its still good to know for future reference

One more thing, still haven't found the plug thats meant to go on the back of the block near the water pump, anyone know what coloured wires go to the plug?

  • Author

Got everything wires up as far as i'm aware today. Fuel is coming through the lines and engine is cranking over, but fuel pump relay on the mk4 fusebox is making a ticking sound, also still no ECU relay attached. Should the relay make this noise anyone?

I take it you no longer need the answer to the fuel pump wire question you pm'd me? Didn't reply straight away as I was gonna get a photo of my fuel pump wiring for you, but if all is good now it saves me a job?

Glad its starting to come together for you now buddy, once its up and running all this stress feels worthwhile

  • Author

Haha well I assume i've done it right if fuels coming out? Don't know if it did this before splicing the mk4 wire in?

Anyway, feeling like she's really close to firing up now, mostly thanks to all your advice and guidance :D One last thing before I fault find... do I need the ECU relay and should the pump relay be making all that noise?

Ok so its almost 2 years overdue but i'm finally going to start my build thread now that i'm converting the Loon to AFH :) Gonna take yall back prior to the respray as this is probably where it starts to get half decent...

So back in July 2011 I prepped the whole car... on my street... first time doing a full car so don't expect perfection but I was pretty pleased with results!

Just seen the blue coupe ... i think i just sex wee'd :/ :o
