I think he's referring to the other baby blue mk3 mate someones done a coupe looks exactly the same from the front haha, get that fookin relay sorted!

Fuel pump relay should click when you turn the ignition on (just so the lights on the dash come on not turing it over) and then after about 5 seconds click again. This is just it priming up the fuel system, first click is it turning the pump on and second is turning it off. It would click on again as you turn the motor over

Does this sound like what is going on?

And no worries mate its gonna be handy having all this info in one place, at least i'll have a proper thread to point people to when they ask me how to do it in future

BTW what sump are you running? If its the 6n one and you plan on running that low I'd whip it off and weld a bit of plate to it as they hang a little low in slammed early polo's

Pat i think the owner messaged me once suggesting a photoshoot, would be funny as!

Nah its more like a constant clicking, like its having a spazz attack in there. Probably the wrong relay. Do i need the ECU relay cos i'm gonna bang one on anyway.

Yeah well you've sort of got to read through loads of different threads to find out alot of it but hopefully this will help anyone in future.

Running the 6n sump aye, i was wondering about that, just filled it with oil now though... Might have to take it easy for a while, how bad is it? Mk3 golf bad?

if it's a constant clicking wouldnt that mean youre going off the constant live feed rather than the ign one that turns off? Or am i talking aload of bollocks as wiring makes me cry. Harry I'm doing oli's exhaust at somepoint so could weld you a plate on then if you fancy, or arent there those bolt on ones that go off arb mounts or something?

i have no idea but i hope not cos i just followed advice and put black to black, red to red and black/yellow to black/yellow at the ignition. Still got black/red to black/red for starter too but this isn't need apparently as i'm using mk3 starter and wiring.

Sounds good man would rather weld shit on as my ARB mounts have braces and major downpipe clearance issues to deal with :p

Vw action, cracked sump

Daily driving, cracked sump

Twisted and pulled the sump away from the block on the mk2

You could say its a bit of an issues

This is one of my plated ones next to standard, with it having shit welded to it it is slightly closer to the toad but standard dumps are piss thin so even tho it hits more it doesn't matter cause its a shit load stronger

Oh and no idea about the ecu relay, I'm a lazy bastard and just left all the relays plugged into the 6n fusebox rather than working out which I didn't need

  • Author

No disrespect to the lovely breadvan owner but was he driving like a melon on acid when this happened or just cruising down the road?

And ahh probably i need all the relays then, as mine has non bar this dodgey fuel relay

  • Author

Ah shit better get some steel welded on ASAP then :( Am i correct in thinking this was on hydros?

  • Author

Well, i'd like to conceal my excitement but... ITS FUCKING ALIVE!!! :) No downpipe attached so its loud as fuck and sounds like its revving itself up which is worrying :s but at least its started and i can put stuff back together from here. Lambda isn't connected could this be why its revving?

  • Author

Solved the revving turns out brake servo wasn't attached :p so it was just sucking air in from there, still really loud but controllable now. When i turn the key to position 1 instead of the fuel pump just squirting fuel in once it sounds like its on constantly.. is this wrong? I've connected the live after it goes through the mk3 fusebox for the fuel pump, maybe this is why? Just this last little bit now :)

The 'breavan' incident at the side of the road was just a case of the sump wearing through after repeatedly scraping speed bumps. The one at action was cause by a stone poking out of the pathway. It really doesn't take a lot to hole them when low mate, it might be a bit of a pain in the arse to remove it and get it welded but it really is worth it so you don't end up getting stranded somewhere when it goes. That was on hydro's at one point but only for a short time and then it was ran on coilies mate

Glad its running now mate 8-)

As for the fuel pump it should be flicking off rather than constantly on, are you sure its the correct wire from the 6n fusebox? Just thinking it may be just a switched live you've hooked it up to. Guess a quick way to tell would be to pull the relay out and see if it still primes, is the relay still clicking like mad?

Ben is it so obvious that I'm using my phone?

Hey yall check that video! She's running ok minus no exhaust haha.

Relay isn't clicking like mad anymore although i get a strange buzzing noise from the throttle body plug when i turn the key into position 1. If the pump was constantly throwing fuel in wouldn't it run a bit strange? I have the live from the black plug M (the red/yellow) spliced into the fuel pump wire after it comes out of the fusebox and relay, should this be before?

Giggity

Throttle body does buzz mate that's nothing to worry about

Fuel pump shouldn't be doing that but it shouldn't give any issues, I ran my first one like that for a year with no problems other than if I left the ignition on but engine not running it would eventually run the battery down

Just watched the video mate, happy days! :-D

Thats good then i think its ready to be put back together and wiring tidied up... No idea where i'm gonna put it all as the fusebox doesn't have a lot of give on it when every things connected, but this is minor really, worst case i'll just drill through my car.

Does the pump not flood the engine then when its not running and ignition on?

looking gooooood!

Thanks mate, its took exactly 6 weeks to swap engines and have it running so about time haha. Hows carb'd life going? I nearly went for them at one point.

carbed life is good. had my old engine out in 1 day, then the afh in and running the day after. tis easy peasy!

id rather injection though! apart from the noise

  • Author

That was the appeal to me but then you have to get them set up and they generally drink a bit more fuel and this is my daily so wanted to keep it fairly decent for it. Wow thats impressive even still though, how come you wanted injection?

they dont drink more when set up and setting them up isnt THAT expensive

just wanted injection as its a bit simpler to upgrade once its all wired in and looks more oem

  • Author

True, and they do sounds pretty awesome compared to injection, but i've done em now haha :p Makes you wonder why they ever switched to injection. Think mines looking pretty OEM now tbh mate, VW made them with wires hanging out the bay remember?

Nah it works on a return system, what it doesn't use gets dumped back into the tank

I cut a round hole in the scuttle tray near where the original fusebox is and fed the wires through then attached the fuse box to the heater matrix behind the center console bit. I've used a large rubber gromit from off the 6n wiring in the hole and fed the wiring through, also my coil is now on the bulkhead near the throttle body as your pretty limited to where it can go due to the length of the wires.

I found it best to wrap a bit of tape around the loom at some thing like a foot between each part so you can offer it up and work out what needs to go where, that way you only have a couple of bits of tape to remove if you need to adjust where a certain part of the wiring needs to go. Plus with it in the loose shape of the loom its easier to make head and tail of what's going on rather than just with a big bundle of loose wires

If you need any photos of where my loom runs to get an idea of where you can run yours then let me know and i'll grab some for you
