Just wondering what you'd buy with your own monies.

I've narrowed it down to these 2 -

I've owned a 1.0 6n2 before and i currently own a (mechanically speaking, FUCKED) Mk4 golf and I like them both the same.

I'm only 20 and insurance works out at less than £1k for either car.

I only want a choice out of the above 2 cars please.

Reasons why you chose that option would be nice too

The polo GTI drives "well", why not excellent?... something needs attention by the sounds of it.

1.5k usually means a poor example, 2k seems to be the right amount for a genuine good runner.

The only question you need to answer is if you want a comfy boring daily, or a nippy hatch?

6n2 GTi will be faster, but the Golf will be more comfortable and practical. Also I don't think the insurance will be as high as the GTi.

Not really sure how a mk4 golf is more practical than a 6n tho, slightly bigger boot but not so much that it would make much to any difference.

I voted the gti solely because the golf is so dull I'd probably end up slipping into a boredom induced coma while driving it

1.6 16v Mk4 Golfs drink fuel because you have to be flat out to get anywhere. So a few owners have told me.

I liked 6N2 GTIs when they came out but they leave me a bit cold now.

At 1.5k I'd be looking for a Corrado or Mk2 Golf.

Or a Clio 172 and ignoring the shonky build quality.

More practical in that you can have 4 adults in them without the rears kneeing themselves in the face. The boots are quite a bit bigger too (about 4 beer cases worth ).

And boring? thats just personal opinion.

Because my W reg golf is knackered, my mum (who doesn't drive) won't let me buy anything thats older than that (a T reg is too old apparently) because she thinks they're ALL gonna be knackered and this isn't something she's likely to change her mind on.

If you'd choose neither of the cars linked, do you have any suggestions for something, currently for sale, less than £1.5k, VW, within 25 miles of S35 (Chapeltown, Sheffield)

Is it really personal opinion tho? Some cars are just boring, there's nothing to them, there isn't supposed to be either its the way they are designed to be. That's not to say they ain't good cars or what ever but small engined mk4 golfs are very dull to drive, they are not supposed to be involving to drive, they are supposed to be comfy and easy to drive, which is unquestionably boring

A bigger car being more practical, now that is a matter of opinion. For some people a smart car is practical, for others a golf estate might be practical. Honestly tho I didn't think there was a lot in it in terms of internal space but then its been a while since i've been in a 6n (closest thing to a 6n2 i've been in)

Golfs feel nice and solid, comfortable etc.

My mate has a 1.6 16v and gets around 40mpg.

Was about the same speed as my 1.4 8v 6n.

It's nice for cruising, practical etc, but boring as f u c k

I've got a 1.4 16v golf and its pretty good on petrol I thought, ir was 3500 miles overdue for a service and it still drove perfectly. Thats with 130k and previous female drivers... I just drive stupidly slow :(

Id buy a polo, golfs bore the hell out of me.

1.6 golfs are garbage. Driven one and been in a 1.6 petrol A3 and that was just as bad. Tanning its arse to go anywhere.

Regards the Polo GTI, i have driven a friends old one and it was great to drive and when you are in a good, well looked after one they feel like a hell of a lot of car for the money. The main issue and the reason i would never ever own one is the gearbox. Maybe overhyped on here but i personally only know three people who have owned polo GTI's. One the gearbox completely fucked on and he sold it (Yorks is now breaking it in the for sale section) and that was a really good, clean and well maintained example. Another friend had one that went through two gearboxes before he got fucked off and flogged it. Rich (Enthusiast owned on this forum) had one and although nothing went wrong with the gearbox he was always worried about it going bang. It really detracts from what driving a GTI should be like. Built to handle bit of pain and not with a gearbox held together with spiders web.

Out of the two cars you have listed i would always choose the GTI but if i had the money for either i would buy something different.

In today's market with your requirements you won't have much choice over what you buy.

If your after a good reliable car for £1.5k that is registered after 1999 or 2000 you're really limited to small engined super minis like a poverty spec Polo or you could go slightly newer or slightly better spec and go french like a Clio.

Or if it were my money, I'd be looking at an E36 BMW, something like a 318is coupe or a 318ti compact.

So that narrows it down quite substantially, oh, and it can't be lowered either... Yeah, thanks mum!

There's a really nice Red GTi for sale on here, but it's over 200 miles away, but i'd snap it up in a heart-beat if i wasn't so far away!

My mate has an Ibiza cupra. 60 plate, it's on it's second engine, first had 4 sets of injectors, and guess what, it's back in the dealership because it's broken again, but that's newer so it must be fine

I'm printing THAT, maybe she'll see the flaw in her logic. Then again.......

I'd the polo for the reasons mentioned earlier. The Polo is a fun car to drive whereas the Golf will be abit more of a bore and dog slow to say the least, but at the minute id choose the Golf but thats purely because I'm not after anything quick I'm wanting practical for moving stuff around. but i was in your situation i'd float with the Polo - Fun, Nippy car that you wont get tired of unlike the golf.
