By the time i got to your age my mum was long past giving a shit what i drove

all i can say to that is

I'm only on my second car and i started driving at 17!

My mate has had about 9, he started at 17 and he's only 19! (i'll be 21 in july)

I would have a much larger range of cars available but my mum says that i can't buy anything older than what i've got now (W reg)

she says

If you're spending more money on a car, then it has to be newer than the car that you've already got.

Why spend money on an older car that'll need more work doing on it than your current one does

I've already explained that that isn't necessarily the case but she won't budge.

Why does it even matter what your mums says?

haha it's all warrantied but it takes the piss tbh, injector issues causing it to glaze the bores. They're giving him a new car and he's just gonna sell it lol

She'll be (not sure if it's the right word but...) co-signing the loan (and i still live with her) and i can afford 3.5k total incl insurance over 24 months so i can't really say "Fuck you, i'm buying this..."

I bought a Polo 6n2 SDI for £1150 after 30 min of driving round changed the engine to a PD TDI 150 and lowered it now it brings a smile to my face every time i start the beauty.

and still get 55MPG daily.

The real question is why would YOU or ANYONE buy a GTi

currently pushing a safe 205BHP.

I really need to upload my build on here, but exceeded my limit :x

No but what you can say is "thanks for the offer mum but I'm going to be a big boy and stand on my own two feet"

Save up a bit of cash so you can buy your own car and then pay the insurance monthly. That way you own your own car outright, its a car that you chose, your not in debt to a loan company, and your mum finally gets to see you take the first steps to adulthood

never used the bank of mum and dad when it comes to getting cars. spent £300 on a mk2, it was a shitter, but it was my shitter. I'd honestly say buy a shed and not have to borrow money.

id rather be without than tied down to a loan of several thousand pounds for a car i didnt even want....

Stupid stupid idea imo.

Its not 'have one I don't want' - I like them both and wouldn't mind either of them so wanted peoples opinions on what to get. My current car will fail it's next MOT and will likely need several thousands spending on it so I need to get rid and being without a car isn't an option. It's also not a Bank of mum and dad loan, it's a proper Yorkshire Bank loan...

Also, someone mentioned saving money and paying monthly for insurance but surely that defeats the point of saving money as it costs more to pay monthly so the money saved has been wasted by paying monthly...

Personally i'd have neither, but if i had to chose I'd have the polo. Every time. Not much point having any MK4 golf thats not a 1.8t GTI or a GTTDI. As they are too slow and can be unreliable. But then again, the polo has the pedal box issue, and the gearboxes are made of fluff.

You should do what i did (although my mom hates newer cars, owning a MK1 Golf GTI and '66 beetle 8-)) and just buy something old and cheap. I bought a MK1 polo for £300 (that let me down twice in 2 years, not bad for a 30 year old car), then a MK3 polo for £500, which i've now had for a year and has been faultless, only needing service parts. Cars that are old can be just as reliable as a brand new one, so long as they're properly maintained :-) And if it does fail an MOT its cheaper to fix, or you just buy another.

Not a great pro for picking another Mk4 Golf.

What are you going to pay more interest back on, a 3.5k bank loan or monthly installments on a sub 1k pay monthly insurance? Also which will you be paying off for longer? Are you gonna have it paid off in 12 months time? If not what you gonna do about next years insurance, pay monthly while still paying off the loan or take out an extra loan to cover it?

These are all things you should think of before jumping in at the deep end mate. Another thing to bare in mind is that as you know with your current car these sort of motors are expensive when they break, if your buying at the bottom of the market then you stand a chance of being in the same position next year

Well that's the old persons view of the situation anyway

I'm in a similair boat mate, my mum is trying to stop selling my 04 plate corsa 1.2 with 68k coz I want a 6n2 1.4 with 91k but I'm Gunna do it anyways, the money I make out of my car and the cost of the 6n2 will leave me with around 1200 profit to do whatever with so if it breaks it's my problem and il deal with it, although it will give her an excuse to say I told you so lol, I would say go for the polo gti mate and just replace the gearbox with a low milage or a recalled gearbox :) good luck mate

I'm glad you've pointed these out mate as i'd completely overlooked them!

The loan would be 24 months. My plan was to buy the car outright (so, lets call that 1.5k gone) then insure it (1k gone, well, just over) and use the last 1k for the second years insurance, then any extra i've not used can go towards paying the loan off. if i keep my spending the same as i am now, then i should have enough saved up to be able to continue insurance without the loan on the 3rd year.

edit: yeah, sometimes i'm just like "yeah, fuck it, it'll be reyt" but when it comes to loans and stuff, i've never had one so have no idea what's involved

Man up, forge your mums signature and buy an evo. Or alternatively, if you cant afford to buy a car outright, sstart saving. Theres plenty of things worth being in debt for, cars arent one of them imo.

You could save up for a couple of months, sell your car and buy a decent enough 1.4 6n2 for £1200. You aren't going to be at the bottom end of the scale price wise on a 1.4 6n2 which means you will have more choice and could buy a better condition car. At the end of the day neither of the cars you are looking at are particularly quick anyway - you may as well just get a polo and have cheaper tax and insurance.

What I have done for insurance is got a 0% credit card and set up a direct debit to pay into it every month so it's paid off within 10 months. This means I don't pay the interest that I would if I paid for the insurance monthly. I will be able to pay it off as I used to pay for my insurance monthly, and the monthly payments were more than my credit card repayments. Might be worth bearing in mind.

Doing my insurance this way has enabled me to Insure my Ibiza Cupra for £1142 fully comp - I've just turned 20 with 2 years no claims.

i may be getting the money from my nan, meaning i've got no monthly payments so what i might do is look for cars which would eat up all that budget incl insurance (for example this GTi Golf) which is about 1.5k to insure so just a fraction over total budget so save up for a couple of month, buy the above and insure it and sell the golf which would more than cover the total cost and i'd have no monthly payments at all so i can save up for running costs etc and next years insurance.

by having no monthly payments i can spend more on a 'better' car...

Please don't buy a 2.0 GTi haha. Get a 1.6 if you have your heart set on another MK4 golf, or a 1.8t if you are going to get a GTi. I had a MK4 GTi turbo, the early ones aren't that bad to insure, can be picked up cheap and got all the mod cons and still pretty modern looking/interior, plus you get recaros in the early ones.

You would be very disappointed with a 2.0 GTi, they use more fuel than a 1.8t and are a lot slower. The 1.6 is only 15bhp less and probably more fun to drive as you need to rev it more.
