Dave's mk2 coupe

Featured Replies

This has been in the works since august last year. It's a mk2 coupe 1043 5-speed. Bought it as a non runner with cambelt gone, sold a few bits off it and bought a 52k mk3 1043 for spares to get it up and running. It's now running an AAU engine from the mk3 with single point injection. It's done 125K so it's been round the block a few times and it shows! But it's just got a full 12 months MOT after replacing a lot of parts.

New brakes; master cylinder, brake lines (solid and flexis), rear wheel cylinders.

new clutch (only replaced the friction plate - £10!)

Replaced the headgasket on the AAU as it had an oil leak. Reconditioned the head (stem seals, re-lapped valves) (Well, Liz did that bit! Thanks Liz! :))

new TCAs

New wheels, old ones were buggerd. Now got 5.5x13 ET 38 golf steels with 155/70/13 tyres

Fuel tank was gone, luckily the mk3 had a new one.

I think this would've been scrapped if we hadn't saved it. We found a lot of things that needed doing, or needed doing soon, so we decided to do it all. Budget was £500, in the end I think it's cost me £496! That includes profit on any bits sold (including the mk3)

Still to do:

VWII calipers and vented discs

remove the knackered vinyl stripe

Then it's up to my bro where it goes from there. Injection conversion's paved the way for a future GT or 1.4/1.6 SPI swap.

Nice work Gaz/Liz.

I can see myself spending far too much money in the future saving cars like this one from the scrap man.

Not much progress. Finally fitted refurbed VWII calipers, discs and pads. Put some G60s on it to make it look a bit more interesting :)

Hasn't been on the road yet since the MOT. Debating whether to put it on the road in april for a bit. Might as well get some use out of it. :)

Lovely stuff, nice ot see another being saved

Out of interest, where did you get just a friction plate from?

Thats handy to know. When I phoned LUK though they said they only did kits.

normally I'd replace the lot but wanted to keep costs right down. The rest of the clutch looked fine. The original plate was down to the limit.

I broke a friction plate from a brand new kit, so i was on the look out for a replacement. Nice to know for future reference they are available, although I did scour eBay for one.

This is a 190mm plate, won't you need a 200mm plate for yours?

Yep. I have one sorted now

Good good. I've decided I will be putting it on the road and using it myself for a couple of months starting next week. Hoping to do a few shows in it. Will see how long it takes for me to get sick of the super-close ratio box. Anyone got an 8P 5th?

Drove it to work today. The stance has sorted itself out a bit. Sat quite nicely at 70 at 4 grand. Glad I've got the big wheels on the speedo is spot on according to a 'your speed' sign.

Performance is leisurely to say the least. Now I know why I've never had a 1.05 for myself.

Brakes still seem to travel more than I would like. Gonna try and bleed them again this weekend.

I feel really silly driving it. The seats aren't height adjustable so I sit really high up, like I am sat on it rather than in it, with my legs against the bottom of the steering wheel. Fortunately I've acquired a GT interior for it. :)

Well since tuesday the problems have mounted up:

Car seemed to be overheating. After a very long fault finding session and £20 poorer I decided there was nothing wrong and it was just the temperature gauge, which i replaced with no effect. So the fault seems to be the clocks. Changed the voltage reg on the clocks, also made no difference. Checked the alternator wasn't doing anything weird. 13.8v across the battery at all engine speeds So I'm really stumped! I can only assume it's some problem with the pcb. Unfortunately I don't have a spare so I'm on the lookout for a set of coupe S clocks/mk1 golf gti/etc.

Gears weren't really in a H pattern. 2nd felt like it was below reverse! found out it was the ball/socket thing at the bottom of the gearstick. had too much play in it so I bought a repair kit from gsf and replaced that. It now changes gears properly. Small victory compared to above!

Brakes are still bad. Next I've got to try bleeding them the old fashioned way. If that doesn't work, it's time for a new master cylinder.

Looks really clean mate , nice to see a coupe being saved 8-)

Been a good 6 months since I updated this thread and with good reason. My brother's had it since June.

I did about 1000 miles in it when I had it and the more I drove it the quicker it seemed to get. It was never a rocket ship but it seemed quite 'peppy' certainly fine about town and managed the drive to all-types over the hills on the A55 no problem.

A week after he took it it came back with two knackered front wheel bearings. While we did them we also put an 8P on it as my dad said the gearbox was too short and the car was too fast.

It ended up being off the road for about 4 weeks as it happened just before I went away to spain for a fortnight. I got back the day before bvf and just about managed to get it put back together in time for the trip.

Ready for BVF

The G60 Steels were mine so he had to have some steelies. He's just bought some le castelettes (a wheel I could never spell) and he couldn't help but shove them on and take some pics

He just needs some more suitable tyres and a stance fix and he's rockin' 8-)

It's not all good news though. He looked under the car recently and he found this!
