Okay so my car is currently SORN, no tax and in need of an MOT before i pass my test, chances are its going to fail so i dont fancy paying a full months insurace while its going to be off the road being worked on and specially with the first month being quoted at £650 :/

So I'm looking into getting day insurance just so i can get my mum to get it to the test centre and back as i cant find anyone with a trailer around here :p

Problem is they either all say on the terms and conditions, NOT modified and need a current MOT

So who can point me in the direction of a insurer who will let me take a slammed polo for an MOT? or is it possible to tow the car although its not taxed and tested and insured?

IIRC if your towing a car if it has all 4 wheels on the floor it has to be txed, tested and insured. But if you get it towed with the 2 wheels off the floor then it doesnt have to be taxed, tested or insured.

One of my mates got done for having his landy on all fours whilst being towed and got 6 points....

One of my mates has trades insurance and plates so thats a possibility but hes pretty unreliable unless its anything to do with drinking or casino sessions :/

So looks like i may have to bite the bullet and insure my car fully and see if i can sweet talk the provider into doing a lower first month payment

Well arent you driving it after its been MOT'd anyway? Just insure it then get it mot'd then get it taxed :)

Yeah i am, its just to pay £600 for insurance, £50 on an MOT £75 on tax, its basically a months wages after I've paid board at home so its alot to fork out at once, was hoping to get the MOT and tax sorted before i pass then my tests on the 23rd so if i pass just insure it on pay day to split payments up but looks like ill just have to save my pennies until I've passed

You can rent a car trailer from the likes of HSS for about £50 a day if you have something to tow it with. Or possibly a local recovery company will take it cheaply if its only a short distance.

Can't you find a friend or parent with fully comp ins that will cover for any car not owned by them to drive it to the MOT?

Why don't you just buy the insurance, but choose to pay monthly. All policies have get-out clauses - usually a 20 quid fine or something is incurred. But shouldn't be too hard or too much expense tbh.

Fully comp insurance only allows you to drive another vehicle if there is current insurance on it. Otherwise if you had a drive full of cars you'd just insure your cheapest value car fully comp and drive the rest on that insurance.

Yeah both parties have to be fully comp and then permission given

I get DOC cover with my TPFT cover. DOC is usually reserved for those aged 25 or over and who do not work in connection with the motor Trade. With the growth of price comparison sites whose aim is to get prices as low as possible a lot of insurers have taken away the DOC entitlement (and many other benefits) as a cost saving exercise.

DO NOT ASSUME YOU HAVE DOC, CHECK YOUR CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE IF YOU ARE UNSURE

will the garage not come and collect it i know mine do if we need to ? they will have trade plates, be insured to drive any vehicle and legaly you can drive an un-moted car to and from your nearest mot station

That's a restriction on your policy then. I went to check one of my policies to be sure. I am allowed to drive another car TPO so long as it is not owned by me (or on HP or some sort of lease deal). It does not say the other vehicle has to be insured by someone else merely that I must have the correct licence to drive said vehicle. I have two other comprehensive policies and I know neither of them allow me to drive anything else TPO. As skyinsurance says, it has often been removed or restricted to over 25s to save money. (One other restriction which has come in over the years is that I can't use the TPO cover to get a car out of a pound but that's another story. Oh, and I'm not covered on the Nurburgring.)
