MK2 Economy Meter

Featured Replies

Quite interested in these if i can find one. Anyone know how they work, as in, where are the sensors? How does it calculate MPG?

isnt it the same as the mk2 golf MFA setup?

Vac hose and rev counter?

from memery it works off the manifold vacuum. i could be wrong though! i used to have one but sold it.

totally off topic, but you wouldnt be interested in some headlight protectors for your 9n?

Really? Thats cool. if i wanted to fit one, would i need to take a feed from each runner (running bike carbs)? Can you remember if anything else is required. I'm assuming you cant just use the dial

Possibly intereseted in some Jon, price and pics?

I'm thinking of trying to fit mk2 golf ones in the polo, i know its been done on the german diesel one but id love to get the MFA working as well.

How would it work then? Surely you'd need to calibrate the airflow to how much fuel it's using??

Eg same air flow with 140 jets and 180 jets is gonna have a massive difference on MPG.

Would all be a bit vague, just fill up and calculate MPG off your trip since last fill. You know it's accurate then

I just want it for the hell of having it.

And all the extra bits it shows.

They may be vague, I just like the oem add on.

Any one know about the polo ones?

But what's the point of fitting an oem add on that doesn't do what its meant too? might as well just fit the clocks with it and not bother trying to get it to work, it'd be just as accurate

If you were planning on doing it tho surely you'd be better off using mk1 golf clocks than mk2 golf clocks?

Why not just put a light that says "shit economy" every time you go over half throttle

  • Author

All valid points men. But would still like one. It may not be that innacurate. Never know until i try

Why not just put a light that says "shit economy" every time you go over half throttle

Ideally it should be a gauge with a happy face, a straight face and a sad face that the needle points to as the economy goes up or down, doesn't really need to be all that accurate then as its not reading numbers

You could just have a series of levers and rods directly off the throttle pedal with a pointer to as said above

^^^Dont need Visual as mines audible, the more i press it the louder the noise gets. Weird.

Gaz is the one to talk to as hehas mfa working in his mk2 derby its in this faq

Thanks for that Luke

no probs i only knew it was there as i was thinking of doing it myself

A lot of high spec beemers have the analog MPG meters, working off intake manifold vacuum (an indication of how much load the engines under)

It should be easy to do, If you know what AFR your running at how many revs/throttle opening, its just a case of calibrating it.

I agree what's the point of having it if its not functional?

"Oooh what's that gauge for?"

"It's an MPG meter, from a golf"

"Sick, was it easy to fit?"

"Yeah, it doesn't work though"

"oh, cool :?"

The one i want isn't from a golf, but the formel-E polo

I've got a stack of clocks with MPG gauges on from sciroccos- £10 each plus postage. also have a stack of mk2 golf GTI dials with MFAs for the same price. id love to see if you can wire these to fit polos as id make a fortune

Pretty much all BM's have Eco meters apart from the M's. And they don't use a vacuum its done by actual fuel usage.. :)

My ears are burning. :)

I have the mfa setup from a late mk1 golf. The mk2 scirocco storm has similar clocks as well but I'm not sure how well those fit into a mk2. These go straight in:

Unfortunately the digital readout is wildy inaccurate, goes pretty much straight up to 99mpg. The reason for this is there is a sensor in the gearbox to activate the economy gauge in top gear only. This is only fitted to 4-speed boxes on the polo, so you have to ground the wire instead so it works all the time in all gears. This also activates the swingometer gauge, which is pretty decent but on the polo the numbers on the gauge are more generous (up to 70mpg I think). I find that if I can still see the needle I'm driving (relatively) economically. It disspears off the guage when you floor it.

The digital gauge also has a hall sender that picks up a signal from the speedo. This can be retro-fitted to any mk2 polo speedo as far as I know, I took it of the original 120mph speedo from the MFA clocks and put it into the original speedo from my mk2

The shift change light is also only fitted to the 4-speed polo boxes, it's the only thing I haven't got to work on mine.

For the full mfa setup you need the indicator stork with the mfa button, an oil sensor and an outside temperature sensor. There is an extra 6-pin mulitplug that goes into these clocks that you'll need to get as well for the extra sensor outputs.

Main reason I did the conversion was for oil temp - meant I didn't need to fit a separate gauge, the other bits were a nice bonus :)

What does MFA stand for? And could you do a parts list Gaz? I'm intersted in getting the oil temp gauge too. Where these present on the polo ones? Those clocks look mint!

Its the outside/oil temp i want too mainly.

MFA stands for Multifunktionsanzeige. or multi function display.

You need these bits

indicator stork,

oil temp sensor its the same as single pin coolant temp sensor on early polos, I've put mine in the sump using one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OIL-TEMP-SENDER-...=item1e663d3fc9

outside air temp sensor 171 919 379 A fitted behind bumper on passenger side. Uses the same plug as a mk3 indicator bulb/etc

extra 6 pin multiplug for clocks and some wiring

the link mr claudia put up goes into more info about the conversion.

My outside temperature gauge seems to be playing up of late, I think I saw it reading 96 degrees one day.

The polo version of these gauges were only fitted to C/CL Formel E models so most don't even have a clock I don't think.

Thanks gaz. So where does the 6 pin plug come from? Also, if you don't have the gear box sensor, does the analogue gauge still work with the wire simply earthed? If I was to get a polo set of clocks, would the process be as above (of course I wouldn't have the oil, ambient temps).
