MK2 Economy Meter

Featured Replies

yeah it's the same as the polo formel E for the wiring, the vacuum gauge works fine with the switch output earthed. As you can see in the original thread I did the conversion over 6 years ago and its still working fine.

Polo version will be simpler as you don't need the stalk for the MFA. You'll have to lose another gauge though unless you find a rev counter like mine that has two gauges below it.

forgot to mention before you also need to relocate the handbrake led to the blank in the dash as the MFA clocks don't have the light installed on them on the golf.

Most MFA equipped cars have the right plug. IIRC I got mine from a corrado in a scrapyard. I would guess newer cars will be different, but everything up to maybe the mk3 golf will have the plug.

I haven't read through your thread yet, will have to do so. Was browsing the Haynes though, and its cleared a few things up.

Hmmm, still mildly confused i think :-s Are the lists of numbers the pin's in the back of the clock? Also, what did you do about the loom that connects the clocks to the stalks? Just jimmy one up?

There's a cabrio in my local scrappy. Might rape it for all the parts if they are there

had a look at the gauges, didnt get to my pc to up a photo. they have a 2 pin plug on the back and a vacuum hose connector. they unscrew from the main bit aswell so its a piece on its own.

Kiz and his clocks haha

Yeah I made my own wiring. list of numbers?

So the vaccum hose goes to the clocks? Must be different to the polo clocks then as the sensor for vacuum is in line with the dizzy vacuum hose with a couple of wires plugged in which i assume then go to the clocks. Wonder what the plug is for, the MFA stalk?

Gaz, the list of numbers in the thread Claudia linked to 1-15 (iirc) with the additional 6 listed below. They look like pin numbers (not the ATM sort  )

It's the pinouts for the plugs on the clocks yeah.

My clocks have a vacuum connection going to the back of them, I assume it's the same for the Formel E clocks.

It says in the description: 'Ready To Mount On To Your Own Speedo Cluster' It looks like what I have on the back of my clocks, I thought there was a mechanical connection to the gauge but I guess the gauge is electrical and just happens to have the sender bolted to the back of it.

The sender you are referring to in the vac line to the dizzy has something to do with the yellow gearshift light and not the MPG gauge needle.

The vac feed for the gauge goes from the brake servo take off on the manifold and uses an adaptor to reduce the large bore hose of a servo down to the small diameter needed for the gauge.

On most standard RHD Mk.2 inlet manifold's, the servo take off is blocked up and needs drilling out.

Really? Thats cool. if i wanted to fit one, would i need to take a feed from each runner (running bike carbs)?

If you have a balance pipe linking each of the runners, just tap into that.

I've got a stack of clocks with MPG gauges on from sciroccos- £10 each plus postage. also have a stack of mk2 golf GTI dials with MFAs for the same price. id love to see if you can wire these to fit polos as id make a fortune

Been done years ago. Even had them fitted to late spec Mk.1's with a button on the dash to change functions(The Golf stalks won't fit the Mk.1 Polo)

Makes you realise the Polo wasn't that backward in its day. A lot of small cars have only just started getting things like shift lights and so on in the last few years!

It says economy meter in the haynes, but I'll bow to your greater knowledge 86C!

Hopefully have a set of formel E clocks on the way, so I'll have a little play about. Need to tap my inlets now though

here they are, ones in a set of clocks - 1 was saved from a set which had its odometer donated.

Many years ago, 'Redex' (the additive people) produced an economy gauge, essentially this was a vacuum gauge that was simply tapped into the inlet manifold. When you let your foot off of the throttle the vacuum increased, so that the needle was in the green (economy) zone, when you floored the pedal, the vacuum all but disappeared, this was the red or power zone. The idea was that you drove as much as possible with the needle in the green zone. The problem being, that whilst you are watching the needle, you run into the car in front of you. So much for economy!

On a more serious note, a vacuum gauge is no bad thing, because if you know how to interpret the readings, you can set the mixture, set the ignition timing and get a pretty good idea of what the compressions are like.

Regards.

Can we add this to the FAQs or GAZs previous thread? Muchos useful info and would be a shame to lose it in the moras of the sub forum
