1.3 spi Engine

Featured Replies

This is just a feeler to get some interest for my soon to be old engine as i'm converting to AFH.

mk3 Polo 1.3 spi engine with 136k on the clock. Ideal for 1.0l or mk2 polo conversion. In all fairness it has been and still is a great little engine with good torque and is very nippy in the lower gears. Ran it for almost 2 years now with no problems it just seems to keep going and going. Recently had oil changed. New sparks n plugs last year.

Selling engine and all wiring loom/manifolds etc minus the gearbox, clutch and flywheel as i'll be needing these for my AFH. Got spare manifold and standard air 'pan' intakes which can be included.

6n engine cover also included if you want it, I think they just make it look a bit tidier.

Aware of the off putting mileage and cambelt is probably due soon or would be worth while replacing to offers around £130?

Engine is now available :) Make me an offer (would benefit from new inlet manifold gasket and HT leads)

What is the engine code? does it come with the injector unit/throttle body?

Also do you have the ecu?

Hi there its an AAV, includes injector, throttle body and pan filters or golf top hat intake, you can take the lot. Think I need to keep the ECU but not certain

I would be happier if it were listed on ebay as good condition and i can pay by paypal.

Basically i have a 1993 polo 1.0L AAU, i'm happy to upgrade to AAV, BUT i wanted make sure i don't get ripped off.

No offence intended.

Why does the inlet manifold gasket need to be replaced?, are there any other problems with engine? oil consumption?

I would like the ECU as well if possible.

What exactly are you prepared to throw in when you say the whole lot?

Sorry for all the questions, i just don't want to replace one shit engine with another

You can still pay over paypal mate doesn't have to be on ebay, you just send money to my paypal adress instead of through ebay.

The gasket needs replacing because it basically crumbled away when i took the manifold off, but it probably hasn't been changed in years, just advisable if you want it to run better, but they are cheap and plentiful.

It did used to need oil topping up quite often, but fear not because when I got the engine out I realised the oil return pipe that feeds oil back into the air-intake system wasn't connected and so was just spitting oil into the engine bay rather than recycling it. I reckon with this fitted correctly it wouldn't use oil. But even with this problem we're not talking masses of oil being used anyway. I think I can include the ECU but will have to wait for confirmation on this, i'd say probably yes though.

I won't be including my gearbox, clutch or flywheel, also I think i'll be keeping alot of my loom minus the injection part. Included will be a pan air intake and a golf top hat so you can run an induction cone filter. A spare exhaust manifold and downpipe + cat.

With regards to it running well, its on 136k so don't expect it to be immaculate, but its never let me down and pulls quite well for a 1.3, has a fair bit of torque. There are no major signs that its not healthy but would be worth replacing the water pump, cambelt and head gasket while its out of a car just for peace of mind as I don't know when they were last done. She was low on power before I removed it but discovered why when i took the throttle body off; a bolt from my original pan filter had been sucked through and was sat on the top of the inlet manifold obviously restricting fuel+air mix. I'm confident it will run much better now I've taken the bolt out :p And it still ran well even with it there strangely. Sorry for an essay but I understand your concerns.

Thanks for the response.

Are you saying the breather pipe wasn't connected on the back of the block?

I don't expect a new engine, just one that is in good working order which doesn't use lots of oil. Like i said in my previous post, the AAU lump is a pile of shit, the last thing i want to do is change one shit lump for another.

The only reason i suggested ebay is it would protect from the engine being not as described.

Will it include the exhaust manifold as well? do you still need the downpipe?

Also when will you know if you need the ECU? and how many pins is it?

Thanks.

It's just as well that bolt didn't get sucked into the engine or it would of been game over.

Is there any reason the headgasket would need to be done?

Yeah thats right theres one coming from the rocker cover thats never been connected as well as the one on the back of the bottom of the block which has also never been connected to anything, i reckon with these fitted properly she'd be sweet on oil.

Its not a shit lump in my opinion it can keep up with some fairly nippy cars (1.4sxi corsa's for example) up until about 60, and i'm fairly sure i've had 110mph out of it with 115 on the speedo (I'm on small 13's so I imagine it will read slightly more than true) going down slight hills. It can keep up in the fast lane no problem, but for better fuel economy i'd stick to 60-70.

Yeah 2 exhaust manifolds and the downpipe+cat included.

I don't want to put it on ebay really due to their fees and incase someone else buys it. But its not a major issue. I'm not out to rip anyone off if its not as described you can have your money back and i'll take the engine back. I've mentioned all the things I found wrong with it during ownership. Oh one more thing to mention I accidentally snapped one of the HT leads during removal, but tbh i'd be replacing these myself now anyway they always run better with new leads. Last changed a year ago.

Should know about the ECU within next couple of days just waiting for a reply from a forum. And not sure about the pins but I imagine it will be the same as your 1.0L ? They're not much different in terms of wiring etc.

I think the wiring looms are the same for both engines, but some ecu's have a different number of pins.

How much are you looking at for the lot? and would you be prepared to courier it to me?

Thanks.

Sorry, one more question, how much history do you have for the engine? has had any major work to the bottom end or head?

Thanks.

Ah well i'm not 100% on the ECU pins but can check tomorrow and let you know. Got about 10 years of history and no major engine work that I can see. If you can find a courier then i'm happy with that, located in Huddersfield, however I have a few interests in this already so its first come i'm affraid mate.

Ah one thing to add, during my ownership the 4th spark plug blew out the head and took the threads with it, but I had the head heli-coiled so its got a thread again and haven't had any problems one year later!

I'll take the lot and the ecu if possible, that's if you want to organise a courier.

Name a price that we can start from..

I've just been offered 100 by someone whos willing to collect next sunday. Not sure what happens now haha, bidding war?

Did you find out why the spark plug blew out?

Are you inviting offers? if you are prepared to courier then let me know if the ECU also becomes available.

Cheers.

Nah but it hasn't happened since. Wouldn't be prepared to courier it tbh mate as I wouldn't have a clue how to package it up for a start. However if engine sells but you still want the ECU I'll let you know asap if i don't need it.

Ok mate, if you change your mind about posting it then let me know.

I think it just needs to go on a pallet and be secure.
