No Major updates for today. I debadged the rear and replaced the GTI badge on the front with a nice new one as it had faded somewhat. Also fitted a red trim around the grille. Still waiting on a few bits for the service and it was bloody cold today! So might have to wait till the weekend. I used tcut on a few scratches and got most of the little ones out. Main damage is that the car has been keyed right down the passenger side :( - So hopefully will have those panels resprayed in the coming weeks. Also had the car in the air today and the selector seal is definitely leaking a little (surprise!) and box oil is on the low side. I've ordered a new one and will fit that with the service.

few pics, but was getting dark so quality is pretty poor.

Plans for the coming days:

1. Fully Service the car myself

2. Fit Sportex backbox from my old polo

3. Get the keying down the side repaired (might have a go myself as a temporary fix). Few other bodywork niggles to fix, I want the shell to be near mint.

4. Maybe BMC CDA induction? Need to research it as I don't want to be losing too many mpg!

5. Other little bits, like De-Wipering, Pressed Plates, LED Number Plate bulbs.

6. Pioneer Headunit + Some nice Focal Components to be fitted.

Saving for some decent coilies - probably a set of KW ones - in the meantime might go with some JOM's. Don't want it to sit really low. Probs a 60/40 type setup with my ATS Cups fitted. My cups are nice and clean in the garage coated in wheel sealant ready for when this shitty weather is gone :D

cleaned, oiled and back in :)

P1030108.jpg

Probs will replace soon anyway - I really don't rate k&n panel filters and a right pain to get clean.

OEM or induction? :D

Too cold todo anything else today ...

The GTI needs some TLC .. Been in the air for 2 days now.

Needs:

Gearbox has 2 fast drip leaks that need to be repaired

Box oil is so low I'm not gonna run it till I sort the leaks

Centre exhaust section has a gaping hole from rust!

Also I need todo the cambelt

Ordered in lots of parts, should have it all sorted by the weekend... Just it's dented my mod budget abit =[

Sump ... working progress !

Edited by apeks

  • 2 weeks later...

Well some progress.. The car is nearly there mechanically

All the leaks have been sorted, new sump fitted. Cambelt, waterpump and tensioners getting sorted tomorrow. Also should have time to fit the sportex backbox I have sitting around.

In the small amount of time I had today...

Changed the gearbox oil with some Genuine VW stuff.

Definitely recommend regular gearbox oil changes on the 6n2 boxes (all models). I did it at the same intervals as oil on my 1 litre and will do the same with this one. 3 litres of the VW stuff comes in at around £20 so it's hardly an expensive addition to your routine maintenance and you will certainly notice that your gear selection is far smoother.

Quick overview for those who don't know how it's done:

P1030127.jpg

You will need a Drain Plug Key 17mm Hex (or a wheel nut!)

P1030125.jpg

worth giving the threads a quick clean, as nothings worse than a cross threaded gearbox plug.. Also undo the filler plug first, just in case you can't get it undone!

and then a funnel + some hose pipe to add the new oil. Best to add it slowly to avoid spillages and give it time to settle.

P1030128.jpg

P1030129.jpg

Add near enough the full 3 litres (even though the capacity is 2.7 I believe). Then I usually quickly put the filler plug loosely back on and start the engine (Don't select any gears!) Run it for a good 5-10 minutes to give it time to reach the 5th gear at the back of the box. Then stop engine and undo the fill plug and drain any excess so that the level is correct.

Soo much smoother! Just look at the black stuff that was in there :S

Thanks! Silvers the way to go :D I'd say aprox 35mpg average at the moment mate. But this is just a rough estimate. Driving upto Newcastle and back this week so will get some proper figures.

Few updates today...

Fitted a carbon enclosed induction kit (similar to BMC but more cost effective! and also easier to clean as it can be taken apart!) . Need to adjust it abit and sort out some silicon tubing for the air feed - but it seems to be working nicely.

Last nights setup:

2.jpg

(cold air feed through a custom cut hole in the front grille)

But I'm not convinced by this setup - I think the aluminium ducting is heating up over the hot engine bay and therefore I've now reverted back to a standard setup for now, behind the drivers side wheel arch:

latest.jpg

Also fixed a few niggles which have been bothering me..

replaced the cheap ht leads and spark plugs for genuine ones:

newleads.jpg

the old leads literally broke apart!:

oldleads.jpg

old spark plugs not looking too healthy :(:

oldsparkplugs.jpg

replaced the noisy serpantine belt.

old and new:

Cars running very smooth now. Now I need some coilies :D

Looks great mate i picked up my silver 6n2 GTI yesterday and I'm loving it. But that said before i start modding it my plans are similar to yours to give it a full service first. What are the intervals for the cambelt?

My plans are to give it a full service + maybe the cam belt.

Then tidy it up sort the niggles.

Sort my detailing kit out and give it a thorough clean.

Then start the modding with some nice ronal lf's lowered on collies stretched tyres etc blah blah

expect to see my proggy soon, and I'm keeping an eye on yours!

On the cambelt the intervals were shortened by VW to every 4 years or 40k miles. Issue is not so much with the belts, but with the tensioners which are prone to failure. I did mine after 6 years and 26k miles and the belt was noticeably worn, as were the tensioners. So defo worth getting it done as it's not worth the cost of a rebuild if it fails. Expect to pay around 130 quid for the cambelt kit from VW, which is not all that much more than a non genuine kit. Worth also replacing the waterpump - I'd go for a non VW part with a metal impeller (aprox 30 quid from europarts).

I really need to get onto detailing my gti. Engine bay could certainly do with some autoglym :p I've started the process of removing the keying down the side with multiple layers of touch up pen, followed by t cut and 3000 grit wet sanding and then autoglym super resin polish. Anyway, will make sure I checkout ure build :}

Would it be worth getting the tensioners done while I'm there or does the cam belt kit already come with them?

cheers for the hint about the water pump, is it a big job to replace?

What's your future plans?

Ye the cambelt kit will include the tensioners so you will change those at the same time. It's not particularly difficult once you know how! If you've done it before all can be changed in an hour and a half. Otherwise I'd say expect 3 hours labour. The GTI is twin cam so is a little trickier. If you haven't done one before, I'd leave it well alone and atleast get the help of someone in the know.

In terms of future plans, I'm going to get a set of JOM coilovers and go for some sensible lows with my ATS Cups, which are in the garage waiting to go on. Have a sportex backbox going on this week aswell. Then I think I'll carbon fibre wrap the roof and mirrors as I'm quite handy with the 3m vinyl stuff. Stubby aerial (that works!), Get my headunit in there and some Focal components/tweeters. De-Wiper aswell. Thats about all I've got in mind really :p Maybe a set of genuine leathers if a decent set came up.

Lack of updates is due to working lots and A level coursework :/

Have been busy over Easter however :)

First, I fixed the electric windows on both sides, but have managed to delete the pictures off my camera somehow, as was going to write up a tutorial. Basically the plastic clips joining the window mount to the regulator had snapped, so replaced with a series of washers + a bolt through the middle and greased up both motors whilst I was at it. So working perfectly now.

- the car had been keyed the whole length of the side - So I had both panels resprayed by a mate who has a bodyshop. You would never know ! Also had the bumper touched up and blended, which is an ok finish for now.

DSC-5323.jpg

DSC-5272.jpg

- Fixed a few niggles such as washer pump to get the car through MOT first time. Found the advisories abit funny :p Checked abs cable and it was secure and I'm not even running spacers ! (yet ;)

mottest.jpg

- Fitted a new horn off a police car found in the scrappie :p nice and loud.

- Tidied my bay up abit. cut the engine cover to fit the induction kit, needs abit of work to be perfect.

inductionlatest.jpg

inductionlatest2.jpg

- Sportex exhaust on.

DSC-5336.jpg

- ATS CUPS on!

atscups.jpg

- de wipered

dewipered.jpg

- In the process of lowering the car on coilies. I've done the fronts and might do the backs now in the dark! :D Nothing extreme, I don't like the idea of a hole in the alloy gti sump!

nexttoblue3.jpg

nexttoblue1.jpg

Got the coilies off a mates crashed ibiza. I remember their ride quality to be decent, they are Pro-Sport. Seem similar to JOM, much better than the budgets of TA technix I had on my last polo. Got them moving no probs. Now just gotta clean em up and fit.

More pictures will follow ! :D

The car is coming on well :) I'm yet to do anything major to mine. I'm going to get it serviced, then buy some more detailing gear, then buy some nice wheels and lows. Job done :D

  • 2 weeks later...

cheers mate :D And ye wheels and lows are the way to go. Think I've got it at the right height now. Sensible lows because I have a very nasty speed bump at college and use bumpy rural roads to get to work! Getting the car laser tracked soon, but I think the tracking isn't too far out as I spent ages adjusting camber. Also bought some pressed metal plates and some German surrounds.

also :D was able to get in some flying in a little cessna at the weekend. My plan was to take some pictures of the car from above, but unfortunately the sun obscured the shots so will have to wait until I'm up again! Did get some decent ones of silverstone:

Hi mate, yes the original ht leads are Red. Will be expensive through the dealership, I purchased them from TPS (Trade Parts Specialists). Think they were aprox £65 for the set. Obviously if you aren't fussed about using genuine parts there are many sellers on ebay that do red ones that would work sufficiently I'm sure.
