Just want to know what the best 1.8 20vt engine code as may look into putting one of these in the polo and breaking my afh engine. I've seen quite a few diff engine codes so far the BAM engine comes up as the most powerful which I knew already but is there a better one as in less problematic and tuneable as I've seen AUM, AGU, AQM etc

The biggest differences are the internals and the head, i might be wrong here but i cant be arsed to search but I'm using the AGU which has the big valve head, forged crank and rods, whereas the BAM has a small valve head, forged crank and pistons not rods. the BAM engines run a lower compression than the AGU's meaning they can run more boost. Theres also other differences such as turbos (K03 agu and K04 bam) injector sizes.

If it helps i have an AGU with the BAM K04 turbo, Inlet, Injectors, Manifold, Downpipe and hoping for around 260BHP with medium boost.

AGU's are 150bhp, AUQ -AUM are 180bhp, BAM and APX are 215-225

IIRC anyway, Hope this helps a little bit

P.s. AGU's tend to be less than half the price of a BAM.

mk4 golf

98 - 00 - agu - k03 turbo - cable throttle - large port head - non vvt - 20mm wrist pins - map to 200bhp internals capable of upto 350 with good smooth map

2000 only - arz - k03 turbo - drive by wire throttle - small port head - non vvt - unsre of bottom end specs (rumoured to have agu bottom end) - map to 200bhp

00 - 03 - aum - k03s turbo - dbw - small port head - vvt - 19mm wrist pins - map to 230 ish - internals capable of 300bhp

03 0n - auq - exactly the same as aum but with light (30bhp) factory map and six speed box.

as for audi tt / s3 lumps i'm not sure on specifics but....

apx - apy - amk - bam are all k04 210 / 225 motors some vvt some not, the k04 motors have slightly lower compression so can run more boost. bam and possibly apx mostly have the 20mm wrist pins so can take up to 350bhp - all are small ports heads

agu is the only transverse large port head one other large port is available on the passat - aeb

agu is also the only cable driven throttle engine.

vvt is not a perforformance increase like honda etc, it's used for creating valve overlap on idle to draw fumes back into the cylinder for emissions purposes

all post 2000 engines have dbw and a variety of emmisions related add ons sai / egr etc and an overboost safety valve

as a block / head bare they are all basically the same in the fact you can bolt any prt off one onto another, interchange heads / turbo / manifolds etc etc

it's hard to say which engine is best as it depends what you want it for, for 400bhp for example probably agu head, bam bottom end with h beam rods and obviously turbo to match

for a cheap 200bhp in a mk2 it would be agu as the throttle is cable and makes things much easier

for 220+ in a mk4 golf it would be a mapped auq for the 6 speed box and k03s turbo

for 250+ it would be a k04 motor as they map up to around 270 bhp

Thanks very much guys il have to have a think later maybe more ideal to just turbo my afh was looking for around 220 bhp as my drivetrain won't hole up to much more I don't think

Good info already posted above, but if you're looking for a straightforward swap without swapping heads and turbo's over and then having to custom tune the ECU to ensure the AFR's are correct, my advice would be source a decent BAM from an S3/TT.

They make an easy 40bhp from a good remap and are already uprated from the factory.
