right I'm back with this problem cos now its doing my head in!!!!

my exhaust has a rattle everytime i accelerate or just sitting idle, i thought one cause was the manifold shield just under the bonnet with wernt bolted down properly so done that and still the problem is there, I've been told it coild be the heat shield but tbh dont wanna take that off or could be somthing inside the silencer or something like that

OPINIONS PLEASE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO

Check all your exhaust rubbers to see if there still intact. If one is broken the system will sit at an angle and knock/rattle.

Check if your exhaust has dropped and is hitting the bracket that goes from one side of the tunnel to the other, inbetween the cat and middle box I think it is. Have had the problem before.

Ye iv got this, after the cat theres a hanger and it sometimes drops down causing it to sit which causes it to vibrate = the rattle

Yeah the sound is around that area so how can I fix it?

Mine did this because I needed a new middle box section as the it had snapped half way around causing it to drop a little. Is it blowing? Also Check your rubbers.

Oh right and it's not blowing and I will check everything today when I finish work is there a pic of what it's supposed to look like cos I don't have a clue lol

If you can get under the car, follow the exhaust system from front to rear, you are looking for any areas where the exhaust is touching the bodywork, or may touch it if there is a bit of vibration or even torque reaction as you accelerate and/or decelerate.

Check that the heat shield is fixed to the bodywork, they have a bit of a habit of cracking round the mountings.

Thump the silencers with the palms of your hand, if there are loose parts (baffles etc.) inside, you may well hear them rattle when you strike them.

If the system is in reasonably good condition ( no holes anywhere,or peeling skin on the silencer box) pay attention to the mounting rubbers, looking for signs of cracks, perishing or general sageness which would allow the system to drop, as said above, check that it clears the little cross member in the middle of the car.

It is possible that you may not be able to simulate the sound by striking it as I explained. If everything checks out OK,but you still have the problem, you will probably need a new centre and/or rear section to cure the problem.

Note: the front section and the cat are the most expensive.

Took it to a exhaust place today it's was free for them

To check over my car and he did everything you metioned above and said there is nothing wrong no loose bits everything was solid heat shield intact etc so could be the last bit you said so would I need to replace the whole system or just the centre and rear section and how much would I be looking at? Would it be wise to put a aftermarket one on?

can anyone help shall i just replace the centre and rear section ? to see if this solves my problem
