right I've just fitted coilovers to my 6n2 and i am a little confused

however i have 2 springs left

sat on top of the box... now I'm being told these should have been put on the front coilovers replacing the top spring..

i put the coilovers on my 6n2 exactly as they are set up here.... is that right for the 6n2 :S??

The way you put them in they look like 6n coilovers. You driven it around with the coilovers on? does it make any weird noises or feel really off? If not it should be fine mate

I've drove it around the block its making some clunking noises etc...... I'm wondering if those two springs i have left over should be swapped over for the ones on the fronts... ie making it a 6n2 setup?

Thats correct, for the 6n2 you need the larger springs on the front due to a different top mount setup. The 6n springs will not sit right.

You need to take both springs out and replace with the larger spring. You dont need the metal cap on either as the spring will end up sitting on the top mount.

Should look like the fronts in this photo i've found.

you sir are a legend, guess ill take them back out tomorrow.... you reckon their safe to drive on as they are or not recommended only talking 15 miles tomorrow..

also you say i dont need the metal caps.... can i put them on if wanted or is it a case of they cant go on? cheers bud

Don't take both springs out, you need the bottom spring in, thats the helper spring. Just swap the top springs over and don't bother putting them silver domed snapped mounts on as there for the 6n

You dont need the helper springs in tho as it wont allow you to get that low and you dont really need them.

ill be keeping them in anyway not looking to achieve insane lows just enough.... its my daily and my house is surrounded by speed humps as is work ;/

Yeah it doesnt matter if there loose when jacked up aslong as they relocate when you let the car back down.

No, not at the moment. As long as the springs relocate properly.

But as there is alot more mot laws coming into place it soon could be but not sure.

Sorry t hijack another thread but I'm so confused on fitting coilovers, on the picture with the classic car, the black rubber mounts, are they the ones that attach to the standard suspention when taking it off, should i have took this off and used it on top of my coilovers?

Yes, the rubber thing at the top is your 'top mount' which contains bearings for the spring to move when steering. They are actually attached to the car by 3 bolts under the bonnet. You need to attach it to the top of you coilovers and then attach the whole unit to your car.

Although if thats your car in your display photo then its a 6n not 6n2 and has a different top mount setup.

Fuck it Ben I'm going to put a guide up later of all the questions that are asked everyday without people even looking through other things then get someone to pin it so it stays at the top.

Would have took it garage but already started lol, third polo, first time lowering. Had a look on a guide, managed fit them its just the problem with the top mount. Is it a case of forcing it on, and the metal mount that come with the coilies, that's not used? Cause this is where the confusion lies lol

Forcing it? Basically. Use the metal top cap from the coilovers, then the lower top mounts onto, top through hole in turret, put on upper rubber top mounts and do bolt up tight with a 7mm Allen key in the middle to stop the coilover spinning.

When i did them on my mk3 i did them in this order, I've never done a mk4 but its piece of pesh when youve done a few sets I'm sure Tom will confirm if the below is correct for a mk4:

Shock absorber

helper spring (thin one)

helper spring/main spring metal sepeerator shim

main spring (thick one)

alloy top cap (comes with coilovers)

rubber top mount

coilover/topmount securing castle nut

car body

small standard top cap (steel with the rubber ring)

top nut to hold to car.

Thanks for tha mate, managed do one side, but had trouble gettin the top mount off the other side, so its just kinda riding on the standard mount atm under car, and coilover mount on top with bolt, can't be very safe but first time, no help and only common sense t guide me. Don't even know if its driveable, not even done back yet, need get the top mount off so currently doesn't have one.

All autofactors should sell them so euro car parts, gsf and any like that. They aren't that expensive either I don't think.
