Do you ever think about who you can trust in the whole car scene etc?!

I'm the same - you tend to trust people on here as age, and backgrounds aside you tend to have similar interest and common ground etc, but you never know who is coming in for the wrong reasons.

There is several guys who do the rounds on forums selling what they dont have and re-inventing themselves every so often to prey upon the trusting.

The car lurking thing may have been a curious passer by, but I'm always cautious around home.

As for trust there were a few member packs as i was doing them that made me half tempted to get sexual health/paternity clinic labels for the envelopes made up for comedy effect on arrival. Of course this would only happen to the ones who i know have a sense of humor.

i had a white coupe S on my drive sat up for a few weeks, i looked out of my window and saw two blokes in a van looking it over and when they noticed me they tried to U turn quickly in my cul-de-sac. i went into the front garden and they sped off so i got in my car and followed them for 10 miles until i could draw up next to them, wound down the window furiously shouting at them what were they doing etc etc, the driver said 'nice polo mate, is it for sale?' he bought it the following weekend

oh and a bit more on topic, a mate on ukmkivs had been posting about his mint black full leather R32's interior he'd picked up with teaser pics etc, the day after they were fitted they were stolen from his car. the only logical explanation was his thread was being watched and they worked out where he lived from pics / location on forum and new what sort of security was on his car from the thread too.

he since deleted his thread and started a new one, blanks REG from pics, no pics from outside his house and removed his location from forum.

I used to be really paranoid about the whole reg number thing, and people being able to trace it, but I don't really care any more. For a start, back when I was at my parents' house it lived on a major road out of Cardiff and LOADS of people knew where it lived. Then when I got my student place you could see it from the train line between Ponty and Cardiff, so again it was pretty easy to trace.

But I don't reckon it's that easy to find a car based on its registration number, and if it is then I'm wasting my time blanking it off my own pics because it sneaks up in the background of people's show snaps etc anyway. Not to mention mag stuff. Plus if someone really wanted it, they'd be able to find it fairly easy by looking at which shows I'm attending. I just kinda doubt anyone would go to those lengths to nick a Polo - it'd be easier still to pretend to be interested in buying something I'm selling and get a chance to case the house properly before breaking in.

Mind you, if someone traced my car by its registration number they'd get a surprise. It's insured at my house in Kettering, which is where it lives, but the V5 has it listed at my parents' place back in Cardiff. I've moved home nine times in five years, that's a lot of opportunities to lose your V5, so I've not bothered. And my parents still live there anyway, so it's not like everything goes to a random address. If they broke into the garage there they'd find a Volvo C30, not a Polo G40. Nice car, but not quite so much fun.

at the end of the day you do drive your car around in public if your that bothered, dont drive it, dont put it in veiw of the public and dont put it on the internetz, will be safe then but not worth owning

As already said, you drive your car in public where the whole world can see it.. why hide it from the internet?

i understand people worry and i hate gypos eyeing things up that arent theres but its why we have insurance and supposedly why we pay tax so the police can find it all recked by some joy riding prick if your to worried about your plates being seen then blank them off and dont take pics outside your house alternatively own a shitter then not many people will be temted to steal it in the first place

I've expressed concern before about people putting a list on here of everything their car has - all the stereo specs, how much the coilies cost, how much the wheels cost, only then to say where abouts they live and put their plate up. Along with a photo of their key.

Like Alex, since others put my plate up, i've relaxed that one (even though i know it's pretty easy to get the address). After all, people in MK who have seen pictures of my house on here, well there's only one place in MK with this design of houses..

But i haven't gone into any detail about my security system. Nobody needs to know how i secure it. Just to say i do have a system and it's designed not primarily to save the car but absolutely to catch the theif, and with little sympathy for them. It'd be a worthy sacrifice imo, given i wouldn't claim anyway. They wouldn't do it again..

Tbh Iv not met many people on the scene but you can tell some are just dickheads who don't give a fuck if they stole something, declared any mods, drove off from crashes etc.

Like mikey said - he doesn't go into detail about his security system, seems a common thing tbh as I know lots have decent security unmentioned on here
