Polo GT (and G40?) five pin ecu relay

Featured Replies

An update for this 14/01/13

I need a five pin GT ecu relay, it sits up by the ecu on a bracket next to the fuel pump relay and physically is a silver box measuring roughly 25mm square.

The part no is: 321919505A

Vw discontinued the part in 2010 and no one sells it,

Apparantly its gt specific (maybe g40 too?) however some people have suggested mk2 golf gti's may use it aswell?

Paypal waiting for a working example!

I'm sure I've bought one of these from GSF

well when i asked gsf they told me they didn't do it :? the same answer i got from euro car parts, als, vw etc...

However i popped into maplins today on the off chance, they did have a five pin automotive relay with the same 40A rating, theres no diagram on the side but the terminals are numbered exactly the same as the original one so i'll try that when i can get a lift to the car tomorrow, fingers crossed.

How much was that mate? Sounds like it could be a good alternative.

I've got a couple of GT dizzys here I don't think I'm gonna use.

It was £5.39 exactly Gaz, so not too bad as long as it works, its not waterproof like the genuine one though.

Saying this i tried it this morning and it made no difference, we traced a possible problem back to the ecu and after taking the ecu to a local injection system specialist that plugged it in to a diagnostics machine they said its not working properly so thats 90% my problem. They also pointed out that the poloace chip that was fitted was the wrong way around :( (not my doing) so that could be shot.

Depending if they can fix it i may be after a gt ecu, and as for the relay a few people i know locally said they'd look in their sheds for me, eitherway thats not urgent now.

And Gaz, i provisionally said yes to a gt dizzy last night that is for sale on here, but if i don't end up getting that one i'll be in contact. Thanks for the offer if i don't though. :)

I managed to get a working gt ecu locally so my cars working :D Therefore i don't need another ecu anymore.

And that relay from maplins doesn't work, it seems to do different things, the four lights on the dash come on when its plugged in (with no key in the ignition!) the fuel pump doesn't run, therefore the car won't start, so basically thats useless :( I'll try and take it back this week incase they've got another or i can get my money back. I'm just saying so someone doesn't read this topic and goes to buy one.

As said in my top post i could do with a gt five pin ecu relay please.

A bump for this! I'm looking for this relay again, my cars got a problem with the relays not clicking in when the ignition is turned on, i figure this is the first thing to try.

what is the number on your relay? may have one, have you ruled out the ignition switch?

I haven't ruled out the ignition switch no, but we had suspected problems with this relay last year which is why i was looking for a spare then, it only happens when warm and relays tend to get warm because they have a solenoid in them right? The ignition switch shouldn't naturally get warm? It switches perfectly when cold.

Tbh i suspect the relay, and since its much easier to change i thought i'd try that first.

ah right, so the relay doesnt have a large number printed on it then? have you tried TPS? they might have one.

  • Author

Ah sorry, i see what you meant! Nope there's no number printed on the top like you get with the wiper relays etc. Just the part number on the side.

Tbh no i havn't tried tps, when i was first searching for one last year i didn't know tps existed but i do use them now instead of vw. But since vw have discontinued it and tps are vw surely they won't be able to get it? I will try them though if i get a chance,

Done a bit more reading up it's not that specific it's fitted to almost everything that uses digifant so that's a lot of cars from the late 80s/early 90s. I'm looking at the circuit diagram in haynes trying to figure out what's going on.

I'm trying to find out the number, the 4-pin relay is a '53' I think the 5-pin might be a '32' but I'm not sure.

VW were still selling these last I heard. I quoted the part number to one of the lads at TPS, and next day, I had it. That was maybe 2011.

its just a standard 5 pin relay with a diode across 2 pins.

you could make an adapter loom up using parts from maplin if you got stuck. from what i remember now from when i commented above theres a wiper relqay from an american VW which is identical

Ok well thats good to hear, i was just going off what the chap in vw said, i took the relay in, gave him the part number and he told me that it was discontinued in 2010, maybe he was reading it wrong.

I will try again in tps when i get a chance, i'm only asking on here again because i'm at uni in Coventry whilst my cars in Devon therefore getting to a parts supplier would be a ball ache, i'm going home the weekend of the 26-27th to go to a big meet, then the Polos coming back up to Coventry for three weeks that evening so it'd be awesome to have a relay in my pocket that i can plug straight in and try.

Will have a look in my spares this weekend.

its not very specific to a polo th its just a std 5pin relay get down near any good carparts shop thery should have one on the shelf

its just a std 5pin relay

A standard 5 pin relay is a single pole change over, the Polo one is internally different

Standard 5 pin relay

Polo injection 5 pin relay

I did though, i tried GSF, Euro Car Parts, All Parts, ALS and a couple of local indepent motor part suppliers, they all told me they couldn't get them and to try VW. I also tried a number of breakers but they just said to have a search of some cars in the yard. I've searched over a number of 6n Polos and Mk3 Golfs in breakers (all they had) and have seen nothing like it. I imagined mk2 golf 8v gti's use the same relay since they run digifant too, so i'm looking at those but so far havn't had any luck. Someone i know locally in Devon that breaks old vw's as part of his business went through his tub of relays for me but the closest he could find was the four pin fuel pump relay, they seem to be much more common (i've got a few spares of those)

I think i said up the page, but i got one from maplins that they thought was correct, but once plugged in, the ignition lights were on (i'm assuming the whole ignition was on) without the key even in the ignition! It wouldn't start on this either (i couldn't hear the fuel pump prime).

Well it appears that they're more common in America, at least googling them parts suppliers in America sell a five pin relay with the same part number, they just come up as fan relays? So that might be the way to go:

http://www.autopartsway.com/Part.cfm?W0133...;a_bid=6773b32f

Although that supplier wants $60 postage to the UK!

http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/products/...321919505A.html

http://busdepot2.webappcabaret.net/details...mber=321919505A

Anyone have an idea what they're saying on this?:

fan relay that was it. either way america is the place to get it i think.
