Good car. Hate it all you want, it's just as much of a plasticky econobox as a Polo.

Styling is a bit love or hate, but so was the Lupo, and this has some of the coolest alloys ever fitted as standard to a Volkswagen:

People are downsizing, this caters for that market. And it does it well. I've not driven an up! yet but I've had a drive of the Mii last year and it's great - light, peppy to drive and surprisingly capable at motorway speeds. Volkswagen do make good small cars.

I even got a Mini Mii on the launch

And the argument against the Mii and Skoda Citigo is as simple as this - residual values. What you save buying the Mii you'll lose when you sell it on.

there is a reason the press have been raving about it, because it offers big car quality and refinement in a small car package that seats four with a good amount of luggage space and tbh I would take it over an orange polo anyday.

photoshop it slammed and then make your decisions.

I like the up, and i didnt mind the look of the fox. Could have done with seeing a few modiifed, as i think it has potential.

It's an up! with a SEAT badge on it and a few different panels:

Skoda Citigo is the same deal, but with Skoda badges.

The bumper, bonnet, badge, lights and wheels appear to be the only differences. I still think the VW version is the best looking followed by the Skoda.

I think this is a mistake. In badge engineering two cheaper versions, VW have lost their edge with the concept and it's too close to the lower end of the market (think C1, Aygo and 107) which they are keen to distance themselves from.

At least with the rest of VW's platform sharing, the cars are outwardly different and designed to compete for different customers.

The VW is ok styling wise (very much in the eye of the beholder) but the Seat and Skoda look a bit like ageing Korean designs! Given the proportions the latest Polo has swollen to, this is as close the original concept as you can now get.

The tailgates and rear lights are different too. The VW and SEAT are at the polar ends of the spectrum here.

I'm not convinced it's much of a mistake either. The up! will get slightly different drivetrains not offered in the others, but yes in launch terms it's basically the same car with a few minor tweaks inside and out. At this end of the market the margins are small, so being able to flog the same stuff with only minor revisions allows VW to share the costs among its different brands, keeping individual investment down. And they've made the up! look as different as possible to the others to mark it out.

But it's not as thorough as things like the sporty versions of the A1/Polo/Ibiza and Fabia. These all have different suspension setups, and the Polo and I think the Audi too have the battery relocated to the boot for better weight distribution. Plus of course the styling is very different.

You're going to hate the new SEAT and Skoda design language then - the city cars are previewing how the rest of the range will look soon.

New Leon and Toledo will have Mii-style headlamps this year, and the Skoda MissionL concept will go into production badged as something else.

VW had a concept car version of the GT at Frankfurt last year, but the production version won't look quite the same:

Top of the range up! is 930kg, a guy from VW told me the GT version wouldn't be much/any heavier. It'll have a turbocharged three cylinder engine with 109bhp. These drive really well so I reckon it'll be a lot of fun to throw around, and three cylinder growl is hilariously good fun.

And these days the little three cylinders aren't too bad. Ford has a 123bhp 1.0-litre three pot in the Focus, and it's a belter. Almost the same power as the 2.0-litre engine from the original Focus but with more torque and nearly twice the fuel economy. They're fitting it to the Mondeo too!

Oh, speaking of up! related naming fails:

Yeah, i'm fully aware as to why, but it doesn't mean I agree with the principal! Indeed, i'm sure the marketing men and accounts department have ensured the project stacks up. However, I can't help but feel that a fair profit could have been made by only covering the niche of a 'premium' city car. After all, I’m sure a fair amount of money will have had to go in to designing and tooling for two additional versions.

As long as we don't end up with VW doing a BMC where badge engineering to cater for varying degrees of snobbery reached epidemic levels, i'll be happy.

No, these are fine. I think it's a combination of the front end styling at the slab sides, boxy nature of the styling of the other Up! variants

Well i think it looks great for what it is, and compared to it's rivals. Not as keen on the Seat version, but i think the Skoda version looks even better.

But a 3cyl GT? I'll have a Skoda-faced version of the black one, VRS badged, and i'll have it with a 1.4 TSI thanks.

Whatever model you buy, it'll be one of the safest financial new car buys - this thing is gonna hold it's value, and still be cool in 5yrs time. At least, the VW version will be..
