That doesn't look too bad.

I think the Up! has potential in the right hands!!!!!

Styling is a bit love or hate, but so was the Lupo, and this has some of the coolest alloys ever fitted as standard to a Volkswagen:

Those alloys are wicked!!

The electric one should have been called a-up! Would have sold plenty in Yorkshire.

Quirky city car and a detatchable GPS that acts as extra guages when not in use, pretty smart.

When you put a modern polo against a 2f they look huge, this is just the new "little car" like the lupo and fox were

Yeah, I was gutted when I found out they are 16in. I'd have bought some for the G40 otherwise.

Yep, quite a size difference. But it's only about 200mm longer, 60mm wider and 100mm taller.

I'm doing a UK driving day for the up! in a few weeks, and taking the G40. So I'll get some pics of the up! and the G40 together. I reckon the G40 will look big by comparison though. The up! is 200mm shorter than a Mk3, but 60mm wider and about 150mm taller.

^^ I recon Up will look huge in comparison, apart from in a panoramic shot like that, which focuses on the old car's length.

Imagine an 86/c with 16's at the same 3/4 angle as the Up's.. Given how much shorter the MK2 is than the longer facelifted version, it's about as small in length but chopped down disproportionately everywhere else.

The Up plays tricks on the eyes with it's deceptively huge cabin, the relatively tiny bonnet and fittingly big wheels making the front look much smaller in pictures. But side by side tends to reveal the truth, especially if you get the angles right like Auto Express did with the red 5dr MINI against a red original Morris Mini-minor (i don't have the pic to hand, you know the set).

They would look so good on a G/coupe if they were the right size!

I know, I did a Photoshop and everything. Someone told me they're called 'Waffles' - which are 15in - but that's the basic wheel you can get for the up! - these are called something else, Classics or something. I can't remember.

VW has really upped its game on the retro wheel front recently. I reckon these modern interpretations of the classic Beetle wheel are cool too:

Screen%20Shot%202011-06-27%20at%206.31.3

I say fuck off the powerful ones and bring the Beetle over as a cheap and girly Golf alternative. 1.2 TSI 105PS and the 1.6 TDI 105PS only. No Sport trim, no big wheels, just stick to its roots.

Pfft. As if.

How much is the GT UP! going on the market for? Anyone know?

... i want one....

Well i think it looks great for what it is, and compared to it's rivals. Not as keen on the Seat version, but i think the Skoda version looks even better.

But a 3cyl GT? I'll have a Skoda-faced version of the black one, VRS badged, and i'll have it with a 1.4 TSI thanks.

Whatever model you buy, it'll be one of the safest financial new car buys - this thing is gonna hold it's value, and still be cool in 5yrs time. At least, the VW version will be..

I`d agree on that one but with a much more potent version of the 1.2TSI. In vRS green, with white wheels. And the GT up! conept front bumper.

Dont think the 1.4 TwinCharger would fit very well as its pretty complicated whereas the 1.2 is fairly small and compact (and light!) and the 1.2 is at least 15bhp more powerful than claimed anyway (my old Fabia 1.2TSi recorded circa 120bhp on three occasions in stock format and it hadn't got more than 6K on it)

EDIT; I really need to check my spelling!

Ok so I like it.

Have you seen the options list some of these things you can only get on top end Polo's.

It is compeating with the Fiat 500 it has loads of different intirior coulors and you can pick lots of wheels. If you take the 500 it is bigger but I am not sure where the space gose as I seem to remember the rear is cramped, this car beats the C1, Aygo and 107 by what it offers, these cars are a bit gutless on the open road.

It's a car for people that go to and from work to the shops and nip down the motorway every now and then.

I think it fits in it's class well if not spans the lower classes, if it is only the driver in the car regularly and only a passenger max, what do you have a smart 4 2 or an Up!

I am due a change soon so when I take my car for service next week I will have a good look at one and see what I think.

In europe they have sticker packs just like the 500 it's taking on everything and whit 5 doors it's all the car some people will ever need (if spec-ed up right).

Have a quick look at the configorator on VW's site.

Those of you bitching about 3 cylinder engines are going to have to face the fact that 3 cylinder, small capacity engines are the way it's going to go because of emissions legislation and fuel costs. You spunk all your cash away on fuel if you want, but most people are going to go for these sort of cars because of fuel and road tax costs, and therefore VAG are perfectly legitimately producing these cars as this is what is going to sell.

The 500 is based on a Panda, but it's a tiny car and most of its short length is lost by the shape of the back end.

Fiat-500-Side.jpg

If you look at it, the back end starts sloping down pretty quickly behind the front seats. So to get any reasonable headroom you need to move the rear bench forward to get any decent headroom. Then while the boot floor of a 500 front to back is longer than the up! it's not such a practical shape. It's a style statement, the 500. Style first, function second.

If you look at the up! it's all about offering as much space as possible on a small footprint:

vw-up-2013-side.jpg

So it's got a short bonnet and the back end is flat, which means you can put the rear bench further back. The boot is shallow front to back but quite deep and very square.

You won't fit a 1.4 TSI in there:

But you might fit this in there.

Well anything's possible but that'll be a tight squeeze.

1.2 TSI in a Skoda Fabia nice, these go well and in the small Up! it will go like stink.

I agree with the 500 comparison style over substance. The Up! is a better package and if they offer the sticker packs as well as the funky dash I think we have a winner.

and the point about 3 pot engines they put them in a Polo and the 75 PS is not too bad so I would think a slightly smaller unit in a lighter car would as reviews show work quite well.

I don't know why you'd want the 1.2 TSI though, it's actually less powerful than the engine going in the GT up! and probably heavier too (as it's got four cylinders)

I hope for the sake of VW mechanics that they are reliable, I would not want to work in that engine bay. My aunties new Suzuki Alto is the same way, the engine bay is so small.

I'm going to hazard a guess it's pretty easy to take the front off. Hope so, anyway.

Yeah I would have thought so, I'm sure VW won't have overlooked that.

the front end just reminds me of Craig David from Bo Selecta!

I had a look at one of the High Up! yesterday - I do like it, but it does need a nice set of rims and hit with the lowering stick. I think i'd wait for the GT! That looks the bollocks!

Plus the new 16" rims for the up will come with 185/50/16's - nice size tyres for Mk4's??

I dont know. Mine ran 120bhp stock on three seperate occasions and most of them I have seen seem to all be making a fair bit more than book figures.

I know I put a box on mine and it ran 140bhp. Went like a stabbed rat. Kind Of like the idea of that much power and it would keep it as a group eninge but one you can't get in the "lower" spec versions.

Oh, speaking of up! related naming fails:

VW_E-Motion.jpg

Supposedly it's powered by electricity. I reckon it's powered by tea.

It's the Yorkshire version.

Too cryptic?
