My Vw polo cl r reg when sitting idle makes a continous squeaking sounds near the cam belt area

Would could it be? When I had a service not so long ago the cam belt was change but not sure

Are they easy to do I was told could be tensioner as well had this problem on my old car lol got rid of it for this

I've got a mk2 but as far as I know there isn't a tensioner on the alternator belt on a 6n. Its easy enough to do, and will cost you a fiver.

That's good news lol and that's a good price surely Haynes would have how to replace?

Been to a garage to see what they say bout this squeak and they are stumped I sprayed the auxiliary belt with wd40 but the squeak is still there at the garage I got told to press the clutch down but the squeak is still there so I gather that rules out thrust bearing right? Even when I press down on accelerator the noise is still

There but the engine noise drowns it out this noise sounds like something is catching on something but not sure what so don't know what to do??

I've got the same problem wayne, stumped 4 mechanics so far!

Changed the pump but to no avail. If I do the alternator belt before you do I'll let you know how it goes :

Its the same noise as mine, like exactly! We could park the cars next to each other and not tell the difference!

I've replaced the pump though :s could it have gone again? after 80 miles?

your idle may be set higher than mine, i set mine lower than usual so that it didnt constantly make the noise haha

Mine makes this exact squeak too :( Haven't had the chance to get it looked over yet though, when i do ill mention any progress if any :)

When I got my car I had to replace the water pump that was in September last year but this noise has only come about in the last month or so

So having replaced the pump, once in Jan and once last Friday. Can it have gone again?

and Aaron I know it sounds weird but can I have a listen to your engine at some point soon lol? Work in Alfreton, live in Belper.

I'm gunna try and get the alternator belt replaced and see if it makes a difference this weekend.

If not, install a pump that sprays sillicone onto to cam belt :p as this makes the noise go away for the best of 10 seconds!

Welllmy old one squeaked and it was brand new, the one in my new mk2 has gone aswell

I clean it off with alcohol based afterwards. Is there any way of curing the squeek then? other than replacing the pump every week?!

if its to do with timing belt, is it not the rollers or tensioner? if this engine has them?

First of all, what the hell are you lot doing spraying lubricants on your belts? Belts which require grip to metal in order to function properly. It's probably alternator belt tension, not the belt itself. They need to be tensioned quite a lot in order to not slip and make noises. With the alternator slack, get a bar under that, supported by the engine block and use leverage to crank it up and get it good and tight.

If it's a whirring sound which increases with engine revs then the cambelt may be too tight so will need slackening slightly, but not too much otherwise it'll skip teeth and then you'll have problems.

The first person to spray lube on my belts was my mechanic :s told me 'it'll be reet'

I've loosened the cam belt off to no avail. It didn't make a difference to the noise. Timed her up back up right now.

I'll tighten up the alternator belt as the next thing, if you listen to the youtube post earlier in the thread Will, that is the exact noise.

After 2000 rpm it goes but as soon as you take your foot off, its comes back, more as the revs are dropping down then less once it reaches idle speed.

I deffo would not reccomend putting any sprays on the timing belt.

And do not over tighten your altenator belt, as this will put too much tension on the altenator and cause early retirement. You should be able to, with one finger, push down the alt belt & it should move about 0.5 - 1cm.

I cant hear the noise as I'm at work and the internet is filtered to buggerly, I'm actually suptrised i can get on here tbh, but is it deffo a squeek? could it not be an air leak? they can make funny noises some times.

There must be at least one roller or tensioner on the engine? cam at top, bottom pulley with alt belt on, then there should be a roller or two and / or a tensioner in the middle somewhere? can you tell me your reg, or pm me it, so i can have a look at the engine spec please?

The belt is tensioned by the water pump I think on these.

Its a 1989 mk2 polo cl 1272cc. MH engine code.

So it is, not much to go wrong there then!

I wonder if it has anything to do with the type of waterpump purchased, ie, not a genuine vs genuine?
