Right, here goes. At the moment my current daily is a Skoda Fabia vRS, so it's quick-ish, and a good cruiser.

But I really fancy something small, low and just something to thrash at the weekend.

Budget is low, insurance is high. Haa.

So, anyway, back to the point. Is a 6n2 GTI good enough to be a weekend toy, or am I just wasting my time?

My concern in that situation would be that I would just compare it to the VRS. I would go for an MX5 or something similar rather than another hatchback.

I could just do that Assblastorrr... Depends what the happens on Saturday, see if it's running ok first.

And Matt, I just cannot insure an mx-5 at 20, I've looked before.

Another thing I should add, my girlfriend will be using the car, at some point. So I think running two cars would be beneficial.

GoCompare just quoted me a grand to insure the Polo. Which was the same as what she was willing to pay on my other Polo, oh what to do.

From experience of looking at quotes, I think that may stretch the insurance budget...

My mate has always fancied a Fiat Cinquento (or however you spell it) Sporting.

I know they look shit but is a bit different - not sure what engine they come with though to be fair. At 20 surely you'll struggle with anything too quick?

I've thought about an old Polo, not much a fan of the Mk2f, prefer a mk2 Coupe S. But finding a good one for decent money looks tricky these days.

@Doug- Always thought any kind of BM would be out of the question, just done a quote. £100 more than the Polo to insure, and less than my Fabia. Hmm.

For a bmw to be a weekend car it needs to have a good engine imo, 320i is a bit to slow and boring (lazy engines), 325i is a little better.

318IS's are fun due to having a revvy engine, id personaly look at a IS unless you can insure a 328i

MK1-2-3 with a decent engine in would be a million times better, as its a much bigger contrast between the two.

I like the bigger engined E36, almost bought a 2.5 with all the m-tech goodies on it a couple of months back cause it was too cheap not to but work started going balls up so I had to knock that idea on the head. You seem to he able to get a fair amount of car for your money too

Ideal for limited mileage weekend cars

Westfield or Caterham kitcar, slightly more expensive than a 6n2 gti but so much more fun. If you can find a bike engnied one they are they best to drive.

Me and my dad had a westfiled with a fireblade engine in it, only weighed 540kg with me in it. That was a race prepped one though so not very comfortable, mostly carbon panels, roll cage, carbon seats etc. etc. etc.

The problem with these older cars is that they'll soon no longer be a weekend car, they'll be a project instead, and spend its life in the garage with half an engine in or something similar.

And a Kit-car, I think that'll only end in one way with me at the helm, in a hedge.

I see what people are saying though. Need to get the bloody Corsa sold first anyhow.

get a bike more fun than a car and usually a lot cheaper to insure.
