Polo 6N Handling

Featured Replies

To those of you who drive a standard 6N, have you ever experienced oversteer in it? It doesn't count if you have anything other than standard suspension (fully working) and using the magic wand doesn't count either!

I can never get mine to oversteer at all, including many brave efforts during autotests on tarmac, gravel and grass and a few cheeky goes in the snow. I've just put it down to stupidly soft rear springs or control arm geometry design.. although there could be a chance my wheel alignments need sorting.

(I'm not intending for this thread to be a show-case of entries from wanna-be racers by the way, just trying to inspire some comments about the car's cornering capabilities)

Thoughts?

Does lift-off oversteer count?

If so, nearly every roundabout (in the wet)

When the suspension went to uprated shocks and 60/40 springs the oversteer was fucking ridiculous, was fun to control but it caught me out a few times, queue sideways polo

Yeah mine did it loads, was fun to drive that way, now i've put my coilies on it, it's even more fun to drive!

The valver was largely tail happy, which i liked. It dived in corners and lifted the inside rear wheel off the ground easily. Skittish rear helped it turn into corners nicely, and yet never went far around (surprisingly foolproof).

This all thanks to the stiffened rear beam, with ARB welded in, as with the axle of the GT/G40 and many quick Golfs/Ibizas/etc.

my 6n2 can be coaxed into it reasonably easily if I chuck it in hard and always comes back.

Is the stiffened rear beam and rear ARB standard on a valver? I thought only valvers/GLX 6Ns had front ARBs.. nothing on the rear though..

I'ts a genuine VW item, no reason to think it wasn't standard fit on our old '99 valver when new even though it's so clean it still has the label on (it's in the shed and for sale).

Dunno how long they'd been fitted to valvers, i presume from the start, and i don't know if the 1.6 8v got it, but i doubt it given that only the valver got 256 discs.

Couldn't get lift off oversteer in mine if I tried

i agree, i always used to get lift off oversteer in the wet
