Mk3 Sunroof Removal

Featured Replies

So I know that the roof in a Mk3 is lower if it has a sun roof. This means you cannot fit a cage from the likes of safety devices.

What I'm wondering is (without me just mashing into my own headlining) is what causes the drop in roof height? Is there some brackets under the roof/above head lining? Or is the roof double skinned?

How easy is it to either get the space back by removing parts, but leave the roof panel in place. Or should I be looking at taking the whole lot out and welding it up?

If anyone had photos of a sunroof model with the head lining remove I would be like OMGWOW!

Any help appreciated!

I'm also in the same boat. Contemplating cutting a bigger hole or another hole and getting on the carbon fibre. Chap did this on a mk2 golf on clubGTi, forget his user name though. It was a full seat 20VT with all the extras aircon etc.

Only worry of this is eligibility for competition use. I was checking out rules for pre '93 touring cars and it seemed to be a no no.

what about hill climb regs you competing?

I'd be legit to remove it I think...

...might leave it in for first year. To be honest I think I'd quite like a left hand drive Mk2 in future...so might save cages/big mods for future. That's unless I can get the weight balanced on a right hand drive car more favourable...even then...I'd still like a Mk2.

Since this GT was a freebie I can't complain about the roof.

Tav check my build thread I just fitted my safety devices cage need have a sun roof got pics of it and think you can see roof mate
