going to do a rusty style roof chop on a mk3 bready.

anybody know if this is legal? has MOT for near a year so got no worries about that, just want to see if i can do it myself and have it for this summer show season to be honest.

what would happen if i got pulled over?

the welding will be done properly and everything will be gusseted and strengthened so should be no problems there but i won't have any engineers certificates, would that be a problem?

if anybody has any pictures or has heard of anyone doing this before, they would be much appreciated.

From what I have read it is ILLEGAL.

Plus a weld would never really be as strong as the original metal itself :/

not strictly true. it is do-able, but the car would have to pass an iva test which have now become extremely strict, so for the average person it really isn't financially viable

I doubt anyone who would cause you any grief would notice?

chances are if the police stopped me they wouldn't say much about it then?

anyone know much about doing it? weak points to look out for, fit a cage to strengthen it more, fit braces etc etc ?

i have been trying to find information on it but majority of the stuff i find is american. anybody know of any build threads in the uk that have done a roof chop or some similar chassis modifications?

so the law on this sort of stuff is a grey area? i'm sure insurance would have a big problem with it too in that case.

sooo what happens if you get a flat tyre then put a spare on? do u get bum raped lol

did a quick photoshop and liking the look of it so going to source a spare roof and see how it goes. will stick up a build thread when it's started for anyone thinking of doing the same thing

i don't think it's going to be to many peoples tastes on here but i want to try something different.

going to make polycarb or perspex windows to fit, not sure how the windscreen will work but the car's only temporary till after summer so shouldn't matter too much. tempted to sheet off the back windows to make a van but only an idea atm

Some thing like this is only worth doing if your going to do it properly, and I don't just mean the fabrication aspect of it. If you do this but don't put it into a iva and at a later point your involved in a serious accident and some one is hurt or killed in your car you will be held responsible for it even if the accident isn't your fault.

Also its not like your swapping a set of wheels, your cutting out one of the largest structural parts of your shell, chopping it up and welding it back on. if you declare this to your insurance I very much doubt they will touch it without the relevant paper work showing its been done correctly, don't tell them and your insurance is void

I was going to make a "if it ever came to selling it with a roof chop" comment, but it ended up becoming far to rascist.
