If that was the case then hardly any cars could be tested if they were a production car and modified, which most cars are other than kit cars

i think i'm getting confused. does the test work on the 8 points system or does the car only need to go through a test if it has less than the 8 points?

roof chops are normally done on pre 70's cars. these typically had body on chassis design meaning the body wasn't structural, hence hot rod roof chops. a monocoque is all in one and has its strength when it is one part hacking it to bits and welding back will mean its never gonna be as strong. also if you put a cage in it, where would you get one? butcher a proper one? reduce the strength in it. its just better if you forget about it.

the cage would be custom made to fit. the strength and safety of this whole thing doesn't worry me half as much as the paperwork to be honest

One thing you will need is a very detailed photo diary of all the work done, obviously once some thing like this has been done a lot of the work will be covered in trim or tidied up with paint and filler so they will want to be able to see the work that's actually gone into it as well as the finished product

You could get away with this on a Volvo, as the bodywork is almost bullet proof as standard, chopping the roof out onthis model will not affect the structural integrity, but try this on any Polo derivitave and your into serious problems

I'm pretty sure chopping the roof off any car that has a monocoque chassis and not a separate one like on a landrover or whatever will make it extremely weak, volvo or not.

been thinking long and hard about this recently and it's all quite confusing tbh. some people tell me not to worry because it can be made legal and others say it's never going to be legal.

few questions for anyone to answer....

if it's classified as a commercial vehicle it would be easier to pass whatever tests is needed?

is there any way of classifying it as an advertisement vehicle? (for example: red bull cars or chopped cars with bill board style advertisements on the back)

is there anywhere that does custom windscreens or is it at all possible to get a windscreen cut down?

the queries about structural rigidity would be solved with a roll cage?
