I want to change the fuel filter on a Lupo.

(I'm used to carbs where the fuel filter just needs slight stretch in rubber tubing and maybe jubileeclip as not under pressure)

It is injection so there's a tank lift pump and Haynes warns to depressurise first.

The replacement metal filter has some white plastic lugs on inlet and outlet pipes

The fitted filter has some grey plastic clips that look like the top of toothpaste tubes on the fuel lines.

I can clamp the lines to stop fuel loss, but how fragile are those clips/caps/lugs when 10 years old?

I've literally just got in from doing my 1.4 16v's fuel filter, what a idiot those little clips are!

I couldnt be arsed to dig through the fuse box so i just lifted the rear seats, removed the metal blank and unplugged the fuel pump plug, then started the car. It ran for about 10s but i kept turning it over.

The black clips are a idiot, right pain to squeeze them, dont break them!! Once they are off (lots of swearing later) you can just remove the white clips off the new filter as they aint needed.

You will have some fuel loss but i didnt clamp my lines and there wasnt that much.

ha ha, someone else is where I'm at. i cant get the lines unclipped from either end. I've been out there an hour now and thinking of giving up and taking it to a garage.

is it easier to remove the fuel lines before you unscrew the retaining screw?

any tips or clues about where to grab the lines?

how much presure should I be applying (by hand or by pliers)?

When I undertake this job, I first make sure that I have at least FOUR suitable 'Jubilee' clips AND about a metre of suitable fuel hose 'just in case'
