Fucking around with the car as usual, and seems to prefer no air filter.

Just wondering who runs without?

As they're at the back of the bay do I need anything on them?

Nervous of fuel spitting back through etc?

I thought about this too; more worried about the fact the back of the bay does tend to get kinda mucky.

I would never run without filters. They are there to protect your engine, if the car isnt running right with filters, then the filters may be knackered? they foam or filter??

I know some people put a fine mesh over the trumpets, which would still be better than nothing, but will still allow crap into the carb.

Nah filter is good, car is rich that's why it's better without.

It's a k&n airbox, foam socks are shit

I dont even run trumpets, let alone filters lol, id run trumpets if i hadnt lost one!!

Markdon explain itb's then as most cars with them don't run anything I'm only going to put an air box on mine so I can run the maf sensor do I can then run the standard management.

A lot of cars that run itb's leave the trumpets open with no filter a lot of the crap that will get sucked in will just be burnt

fair enough if its a golf engine or something where they will be pointing at the grill, but imo its gonna be pretty impossible to harm the engine if there at the back. I've gone nearly a year with no filters

If there single socks then it will cause issues.

Fitting filters should lean it out slightly by restricting the airflow just that little bit or something, the guy who helped set mine up said something about the difference between settings when running without a filter compared to running with.

Mines generally richer with filter, less air but jetted, no filter = more air flow = leaner. Hence upjetting with a higher flow filter.

Normally people dont run filters due to space. Look at race cars? They have airbox with a filter in. Most stuff gets burnt? Stones? What if a belt snaps and shreads, bits of rubber everywhere.

Cant see proper itbs running well on standard management?

Why would you not need to run a filter on carbs or itbs? When pretty much every car sold in the world has an air filter?

I've ran bike carbs on the standard 1.3 and also my afh with no filters or mesh attal, been on the afh for around a year now maby a tad more. the inlet being at the back of the bay would pick up less crap natrally anyway unless your running a cold air feed ofcourse. most things would just be burnt.

it isnt advisable but it also isnt the end of the world people do it and there engines dont blow up every day. making sure the mixture is right is far more important in my eyes, too lean and you will be melting piston to rich and you will be wetting the bores and wearing out bottom ends.

just do it air filter are for wimps :p

I've tried a couple of air boxes, one with mesh across it's width and a large enclosure with cold feed pipe. The open one made no difference, just protected against leaves, stones etc.. But with the enclosure not only does it sound quieter but it didn't seem to run quite as well.

Most of the time i've ran without filters. Never needed them, not even for the MoT. That's a good 50k miles over several years filterless.

Does discolour the paint on the bonnet and firewall panel, though. This suggests a degree of fuel loss, and that represents a fire risk, but i've held a lighter there with the engine running and didn't blow myself up..

Still, in the interests of efficiency i intend to try an air box again, probably making one to the shape of the space available instead of trying to fit a square one in there.

I've got a pipercross sausage one, job done. Runs fine with it on and AFR is spot on. I do 1000 miles + a month in my mk2 so it's gotta be reliable. Don't like the idea of the slides getting crapped up or the chamber getting full of shit if I can avoid it.

Fair enough, only reason I'd run a filter is for peace of mind tbh :)
