looking at numerous engines for my mk3, converted my old one to gt before so dont wanna go down that route, looking for more torque/power this time.

cant find a g40 for sale anywhere so if anyone knows of one pipe up!

i am tempted for the afh on carbs that everyone seems to be running atm, but also looking at the 1.6 aee but not sure what there like tbh never known anyone thats had one, what they like to put in a mk3? if the timing belt and head gasket etc is done before i put the engine in will i benefit from the engine?

and also with carbs on a 1.6 what power would you be looking at?

if anyones put one in a mk3 before give me a shout please

I have an AEE in my 6n and it's pretty quick if you ask me. If you change the head gasket make sure you change all the seals ie valve stem oil seal and cam seals, if you can I would do the crank seal and the water pump as when it's out it's very easy. Reliability wise (once all this is done) it's as reliable as any polo engine. also what I have noticed is you have to have good quality ignition parts as it doesn't like the cheaper stuff, but once fitted it wont give any trouble.

MikeyMK enjoyed his AEE in his mk2 due to masses of torque, I think his was virtually standard on carbs.

Mines had a bit of work and seems to be around 105hp which I'm not happy with and still think I have some sort of issue, but ran 16.5 at santa pod with a passenger, which IIRC mk2s with an AFH ran that sort of time?

Something different to do, but AFH is the easy route IMO, I built an AEE to be different, AFH is power out the box.

G40 conversions come up, usually around £1000 these days

Very torque biased, doing it again i'd try out a 6n 1.4 8v camshaft, dunno why i didn't before but for knowing i'd prefer to use the 16v head. Was a lot of fun and sounded better than any other engine i've carb'd.

Sorry for the thread jack, but can a 16v head be used on an AEE? And also what are the advantages of using a 1.4 8v cam? Sorry if it's a noob question I just never though of this before.

I was thinking about the 16v head, but I'd imagine it's the same as doing it to a 1.4 so needing the 16v pistons and rods and such?

yeah i understand about the valvers being the route to go down but with the price there going for lately is getting daft, got offered a 1.6 with the box cheap so wanted the info on them, they a reasonably straight fit into mk3's?

Easy when you know how, which is why some who have done it have written their wisdom in the FAQ section

Ah right, I though the 16v head wouldn't fit. Just thought maybe I'm missing some.

Ben, by all means stick with the AEE, if you can get your hands on one for a good price then do so. 16v are nice but for the price I'm sure you could make a really sweet setup with the AEE.

It's probably not all in the FAQ, but it is all in the engine forum.

I myself have gone into detail about how you can, and cant, mix certain engines to create certain engines. There are a couple of great topics on how to make 1.6 16v engines in various ways by various people.

They're not always easy to find, like one of the best topics on fitting bike carbs is called 'fitting bike carbs on a 1.3 Golf' or something like that, so it's bad for the search engine. But there's also one somewhere called something like 'AFH 16v head wit GTi bottom end' and that's the big one you want in this case.

Expect to find pics like this, where fools have spent all weekend in the sun, and half the night behind the sofa, giving it Rubiks cube style antics until they found what worked..
