GT 085 G'box w/ cable shifters?

Featured Replies

I've been hammering the search function and from what I gather it should be possible to use the cable change system from some 6n/Lupo/Mk3 Golf, that also use 085 boxes?

I quite like the idea of a shifter mounted high up like a CAE ultra shifter. Now I wouldn't pay that sort of money but I think DIY with cables rather than shaft would be easier.

Just looking for confirmation/thoughts... : )

There is a mk1 polo (browny gold one) that has cable shift but he is running a mk5 GTI lump.

Given the fact alot of the mk4 lot (cable shifters) run 085 boxes on the AFH setups i'd presume all was good fitment wise and the hardest part, like the mk1 polo found was the rod change mount is ALOT smaller than the cable change so a nice bix has to be cut into the bulkhead for clearance.

By mount I assume you mean rear gear box mount?

It's a mk2 that has it fitted benomon not a mk1

As Ben says tho the cable change mechanism at the gearbox end is the part that will give you the hassle, on the mk2 he has cut a section out of the passenger bulkhead/foot well to get the clearance needed. Again tho kiz has looked into this more than me, infact he had all the parts to do it but deemed it not really viable.

It's some thing I would still like to look into further but its way down my list of shit I wanna do atm

yer- if you look closely at the bronze mk2, you will see quite a large section of bulkhead has been chopped into to give room for the cable mech which hangs off quite far from the back of the box. if i get a spare moment tonight il get some photos up of what i mean. there 5!!!! years old now! amazing to think how long its been since i trialled it

That'd be awesome. Doubt mk3 has much more room...nout wrong with a little chop chop.

took me bloody ages to find these!

so as you can see - you cannot pull the lever as it will hit the bulkhead - and the large alloy part is far to long to fit - so you need to proper cut into the bulkhead (minefield tbh)

cannot find the image of how it was done by the guy with the brown mk2, its on my pc somewhere - i just cannot find it and i need to get cracking on mine, sorrrry

Thanks for pics, big help! Given the choice shaft change seems easier, even with a shifter tower!

yer no worries mate.

I had to relocate mine to make the dashboard work in my car- used a mk2 golf item which i modified the ball bit on so the gearshifter sat further back and was 8" higher than standard. had to make a hole in the tunnel for the shift rod tho to do it
