6n 1.4 16v engine rattle when cold

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Got myself a 6n 16v last night but noticed today on cold start up that there is a bit of a rattle until the engine gets a bit warmer, any ideas?

New to this engine so don't really know much about it so any help and advice would be very appreciated

Cheers,

Callum.

Your problem is probably down to the hydraulic tappets in this engine, if so, this is not too serious.

One thing that these tappets do not like is 'thick' or old oil, so if the car has not been service recently, or you are not sure what oil it has in, I would suggest that you change the oil and filter. If you do this, you may not get an instantaneous cure, as the new oil has to find its way into the tappets.

Another possibility is some 'piston slap', but again, if it goes off when the engine is warm, it should not be too much of a problem.

NOTE: Piston slap will be at engine speed, tappet noise will be at half engine speed, however, this can sometimes be difficult to differentiate.

Regards.

Just another quick question, if I leave it as is am I risking damage to any engine parts?
