I don't think the government are getting £32 million out of nowhere though, it was just £32 million extra that day - you've got to remember most of these people will have used that petrol anyway they're just filling up now instead - so not a huge amount extra for the government.

The price of fuel has been pushed artificially high by garages cashing in on the panic, the higher the price of fuel the more tax the government earn from it. Why do you think they are scaring people into buying as much as possible when they know that there isn't going to be any shortage if no one panic buys?

The government aren't stupid, they're promoting a revenue higher than would ever have been paid, to offset the loss expected over easter.

Higher prices mean more tax per litre. Driving with a full tank uses more fuel, meaning more tax per mile. The same people will have paid more tax than they would have done, yet some people just don't get it..

It's brilliant - a genuine manufacturered tax injection right when it's needed. I actually don't care as it doesn't affect me. If anything, other people out there pumping tax into the kitty seems a good thing. I might go and jump in a que today, just to be part of it.

And because of the carion media we have, that preys upon the smallest mistake and mildest misdemenour, it has been blown up into a massive issue.

To answer the question above, have we become so stupid, yes we have. We vote the politicians in, we fall for all the political tricks they play and we don't stand up for our rights as people so long as we can have convenience. Someone mentioned becoming like the French earlier on, well at least they attempt to change things, regardless of the motivation. The best we can do is burn down our own neighbourhoods, and then claim 'we got caught up in the violence'. At lease have a reason to cause trouble. Social unrest my arse, people wanted a scrap that night, then blamed it on the police because they're an easy target. It's all the same shit.

The petrol stations round my way have actually jacked up the petrol price by 3p per litre since the 'panic buying' started. As if the price isn't high enough...which also effects everything else you buy too.

If it was just one mistake then you could try and use that excuse but that is far from the case. The very people that have put policies in place to make sure there are sufficient fuel supplies to see us through, have then gone on to cause so much panic that we then run out of fuel. This is either incompetence on a massively grand scale, or its been done on purpose for what ever reason. Call me cynical if you like but I think you would need to be very nieve to believe that this was just some people fucking up so badly, the fact they won't retract this stupid 'advice' they are peddling just adds weight to the opinion that its not just a mistake, if it was then surely they would retract it?

Vodka - ~£10 - £20 per litre

at work, a 450ml cup of tea is 70p, so that's about £1.60 a litre

Dunno why people are saying the government are stupid, they're clever and have obtained a shit load of money , people filling up jerry cans and flapping are the idiots, the government are also smart to make you think it was a mistake etc haha.

This panic buying is brilliant.

When the strikes do kick in, in over a weeks time (if they do that is..) everyone will have a pretty full tank because they keep topping up small amounts of a already brimming tank.... and all the petrol stations will get restocked over this weekend and topped up too.

The strike will be COMPLETELY minimised.

If i remember rightly from my history lessons... didn't Thatcher do a similar thing with Coal? :) Create a panic while the system can cope... minimise the impact of a strike and defeat the strikers.

i work for my local council collecting recycling from domestic properties. we're somehow classed as an essential service so always have access to fuel!! The police round here are getting so pissed off with idiots queueing up and blocking the roads that anyone blocking the road is slapped with a fine how id love to watch that going on....

Mileage doesn't matter when I'm only paying 20 quid to fill. doesn't matter what my cars performance is or the price per litre, as its still 20 quid.

Sometimes when i'm really short of cash I'll just put 10 quid in, therefore halving the cost of fuel...

haha I only put £20 in at a time, it took me 6 fuel stops to get to Scotland

I just always fill mine up, if was bothered about weight or consumption I wouldn't have audio or be lowered or have carbs haha

I tend to just stick £20 in a week, as the price of fuel goes up the only thing that changes is how far into the red the gauge is the night before pay day

This is all just bullshit. Can't believe so many people going mad. I saw an old lady put £8.60 to make sure her tank was full. How many miles do you drive lady!? Bet she won't have spent that £8.60 even by the strikes in at least 10 days - by which time I'll need £120 worth more diesel.

Is annoying as I have to fill up every week for work, half the pumps at my local had run out because of people panic buying.

Someone at work was telling me how he was heading out tonight to fill his cars up cos they were only on half a tank. And he only uses the car once or twice a week! Fool.

Same story, except I fill up twice a week in a vehicle with a 600 mile range. Queue a mile long with people who couldn't wait to fill up @ £1.509 a litre because they might need to go to the shops while I'm sat 200 miles from home.

The upside is, I quitely smiled as I paid £1.44 a litre and they paid £1.509

as much as it is terrible story about the lady set herself alight, it is cleansing the gene pool.......... Harsh but if you are that thick.......
