After getting my breadvan stolen and recovered, I'm now starting afresh with that bike carbed engine fitted into a really nice B plate mars red shell.

I'd like it to be secure but don't know where to start with security equipment.

What is everyone else using to protect their pride and joy?

i had a cheap central locking alarm kit that also imobilised the starter motor. i then also had a fuel pump cut off switch, a coil cut off switch, and a battery cut off switch lol no one was stealing my car

Removable steering wheel?

Take the King Lead off and stick it in your pocket.

On a serious note, I'm looking at immobilizers as well and really dont know what to go for...

For overnight anti-theft you could'nt beat the removable steering wheel, but you'd feel a prat walking into the pub or around the shops carrying your wheel with you

As to aftermarket alarms/immobilisers unless they're proffesionally installed your insurance company wont be interested

I've got a toad immobiliser thats yet to be fitted.

May sound silly but alarm stickers in the windows and a flashing light on the dash will make most twats think twice about trying. But even cheap alarm/immobilisers will work fine for years if fitted properly. Check on eBay for car alarm, you'd be surprised at whats on there

I'm the only one who knows why mine's going nowhere under it's own steam without my permission, and it's staying that way.

This approach doesn't get me cheaper insurance in the short run, but it does mean i don't claim for theft, so i get my discount in time.

Most importantly, i get to keep my car. I also get a generously sized free sample of DNA from anyone who tries it on.

My advice is to investigate how cars get nicked, then use your skills to ensure certain outcomes from such attempts.

Same to mine, mines difficult to start unless you know how BUT I want an alarm to at least give me a chance of catching them in the act, been a while since I had live target practice.

discloks seem pretty popular , with some luck it might deter them from busting the car up before they realise they cant get away

I have just installed the falkon predetor xl3 alarm on my mk2, you can get them on ebay for about £50, I've had one on my girlfriends car for about 2 years and its brilliant, 2 stage shock sensor, immobiliser and you can get loads of ad-ons for it like window roll up, pager keyfobs, remote start ect

I fitted a Sterling alarm to my 6N2. Not the cheapest but has been very reliable. Its got everything you need, alarm, ultrasonics, flashing light, immobiliser, integrates with central locking to make it remote operated and its Thatcham approved.

I've had alarms professionally installed in the past and it hasn't made any difference to insurance premiums, its more piece of mind. I'd say if you can do the fitting yourself competently then do so. Also you can add a few differences to the install from the standard to make it even harder for the would be tea-leafs!

Yeah, i have little to stop them breaking in. I don't mind them getting in the car, nothing in there worth nicking. But i could do without the damage to the door skin.

If i put a lock on the handbrake i could consider leaving the doors unlocked, but these kinda people tend to be so stupid they'd do the damage without checking the door is actually locked in the first place..

How easy was it to fit DanIOW? I suppose I'm just looking for a kit that will disable the engine from starting, along with some fancy stickers for the window and a light on the dash, along with flashing indicators and siren. Preferably have a movement sensor so if anyone tries to break in. Of course there's no central locking or electric windows to worry about.

Can you connect a wheel speed sensor into an alarm? So if car were to be rolled/towed it would go off?
