Ok so I am thinking of changeing my car.

I have a 1.2 70 Polo at the moment. I would get another Polo but they are a bit over priced compaired to other cars so my choice

VW Up! High up + extras

Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2 TSI 105 + extras (VAT free makes it about the same price as the Up!)

It would be nice to have an unbise opinion on this as I posted on the Up! forum and everyone so far was for the up. I thought I may get a better slant on things as the cars I am looking at both have things in common with the Polo

I think your expecting too much from the Up.

^^^^^ yer I thought it was the new Lupo but it is far from it, good if you have a Citroen C1 it's an upgrade but from a Polo maybe not.

Never driven an up, but I really dislike the fabia. If I wanted a new small vag, i'd get an a1, but for the money you're going to spend on a new vw, you could do so much better.

The Up would be so much better if it looked like the concept pics...

If you don't want to click the link these are the downsides to the Up!

The engine has been reported to not be as powerful as it should be in such a small car

The gearbox is not the standard VW one

There is only one electric window button on the drivers side so you have to lean over to operate the passenger window

No vanity mirrors (ok I don’t use them that much but the ladies I have in my car do)

The boot has massive amounts of paintwork showing (so your weekly shopping will scrape along it

The Trip computer has only got one line so if you like a clock nothing else is shown (If you forget or don’t have time to put the maps and more up you get no info)

Not sure about this one but as I see it if you forget the maps and more screen you don’t have anything to go on when using the reversing sensors unless you just get a beep and with no visual keys to see where you are near it would be a bit useless

Maps and More you have to remove it every time you get in or out of your car this includes at a petrol station or when you stop to get a paper (bit of a hassle or a smashed window)

If you spec it up well a High Up! Comes in at about 11500 (this includes a lot of the packs) and a Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo with a 1.2 TSI 105 BHP is about the same price with a near identical spec (currently you pay no VAT on new Skoda’s)

Basically, its lame. Get a 9n3 1.8t bwaaarpppp

Seriously tho why anyone would spend 11k on some thing like that is beyond me. Personally I'd spend a fraction of the cost of that on a used motor with infinitely better spec. So I think you should buy a saphire cosworth and still have change left over to insure and run it for a year, they have vanity mirrors and have master window switches on the drivers side

Out of the two the skoda is the better looking imo

I've driven both.

Fabia's a good car but it's getting on a bit. The 1.2 TSI suits it (and all other VAG superminis) really well, it's not up to much on paper but it's a giggle in the car. It's not bad in Golf-sized cars either, actually.

The up! is something different altogether. If you're looking at the High up! you'll be looking at the 75bhp engine I assume. It's a definite class below the Fabia but the interior is more modern (Fabia is five years old now and they've not done much inside), though the Skoda obviously has more space.

Pound for pound you'll get more of your money back if you buy the up! - Fabia will depreciate quicker because used car buyers are snobs and it's an older car in the first place. Just being practical, of course.

If it was my money, I'd probably buy an up! tbh. The Fabia's a great little car but while they've done a good job of stripping back the bits you don't care about, it's a bit joyless and does feel like the Polo's cheaper cousin. The up! is a more spritely little thing and it's surprisingly accomplished at high speeds. Moreso than the PSA/Toyota rivals which are, like the Fabia, getting on a bit in terms of life cycle. Plus in top spec you'll get all the trimmings.

And up! is the new Lupo. Very much so. It's a step down the Volkswagen range from a Polo, but so was the Lupo.

I prefer the UP! Although The skoda is better value, and bigger. The UP! I think is actually quite a nice looking little car, and all the 'down sides' i wouldnt even bother about. Parking sensors, who needs them on such a tiny car? and why does the driver ever need to open the passengers window? On the subject of the UP! being the new Lupo, i thought the fox was? But who in thier right mind would buy a fox now? VW should drop it i think as the UP! is far superior. Personally though, i'd buy neither, as i believe new cars are a false economy. I'd buy a used phaeton . Might sound stupid, but its pretty much stopped losing money, and is all the car you could ever need. For as little as £4.5K. Top spec V10 TDI's start at about £8k

I know this will be met with a violent back lash of why!

But I get my cars on PCP finance every 2-3 years I always get a reasonable amount off my new car and always get free servicing, breakdown and other things with it.

I need a car that I can rely on (yes I know you can't guarantee that any car is bullet proof but I don't have to pay for 90% of anything that might go wrong)

Hope I don't get black balled after I have let you know I give VW lots of my hard earned.

To be fair I would have a mk3 again but finding half decent ones is not that easy.

Ah well if your getting it on the never never then imo it has to be the Citroën ds3, my mates just picked up a 110 D-sport. I'm not really a fan of modern small cars but I do really like this a lot
