Some were full restorations, others are small paint work and mechanical work.

But most off the time I make tea and do all the shit jobs! :/

Well, here's the write up, as promised.

Kilroot was built in the mid 70's, originally intended to run 4 units on oil and to be the biggest in Northern Ireland. However, by the early 80's, oil prices were feared to rise. So, the station was converted to run mainly on coal and have oil for running heavy loads. Only two of the four units were ever completed.

An initial workforce of around 300 has dwindled to 90, which is quite eerie as no one is ever about, espescially as it's such an enormous place.

So, here is our workshop. It is an overly large building for what's in it (probably due to dwindling workforce) it has a number of lathes and a milling machine etc, a welding bay and benches..

Now we walk into the basement. This is part of Unit 1. This is mainly full of heat exchangers, pumps, valves... the usual format in a power station.

Here is a Boiler feed pump. It pumps purified water into the boiler. I can't remember what sort of figures we're talking in terms of temperature and pressure of the water as it goes to the boiler, but it's something mad like 90 degrees and 180 bar.

Here is the front face of the boiler. you can't see it well from pipework and framework etc.

The 11m level gives us a good view of the two turbines and generators. Unit 1 is closest in the picture and Unit 2 is in the background.

As i mentioned earlier, units 3 and 4 were never built. The space where the parts were left is named 'Phase 2'

Later on today, I took one of the work vans for a spin round the site.

This is the coal plant, where coal is off loaded from the jetty, crushed, and conveyored to the main plant.

Up the other end of the site, we have the oil storage tanks, K1 and K3. K2 collapsed one day and wasn't built again.

Here I am standing on top of K3, looking down at the site. The large chimney is for the main un its whereas the small chimney is for the gas turbines that get used in emergency situations mainly.

This is the Flu Gas Desulpherisation plant. Built recently to meet emissions restrictions.

And this is the van I ran about in!

Eric, i'll have a train horn as well, please! And one of those turbochargers for a 4cyl 3.0 Porsche 944 engined E30 i suddenly feel like building..

I can't really join in here, i work in a factory making stuff but the company rolls almost entirely in-house so we design our own machines (which i run and maintain), photos aren't generally allowed. If i say specifically what i make then i risk exposing exactly where i am, but i can say i'm in the plastics industry and make stuff out of plastic using moulding process.
