How similar are aircraft brakes to road vehicle brakes or is the only similarity the slowing down of something?

in principle its the same sort of thing but more closely resembling a multiplate clutch.

In the picture below you can see the 2 halves of the brake - when the wheel is turning half the discs in the brake turn with the wheel (rotors) (see the tenons on the inside of the wheel and how they engage onto the rotors) and the rest do not rotate (stators) which have the same tenons but on the inside of the disc this time and on the torque tube which they run on.

it gives more braking surfaces having more discs, as well as better heat dissipation.

The rest of the hydraulic system (in the photo as an electro-mechanical brake not a hydraulic) has a far more advanced antilock arrangement of servo valves and anti-skid computers then your normal car - it has to do more work!

The electronic versions of aircraft brakes will do away with the need for valves and anti-skid controllers as a computer will do the work telling the actuator to apply load and back off when it detects a skid from a simple transducer mounted on the inside of the axle and on the hub cap- it will also apply the correct load proportionate to the aircraft landing speed, weight, angle wetaher etc etc instead of the pilot just using the feel of the pedal.

We really are moving away from the pilot doing anything now hahahahaha i do honestly believe that the main story behind the development of this technology is to be able to land the plane from the ground if anything ever happened mid flight

This is a modern update on the old maxeret anti-locking system, the system used on the likes of the Boeing 737,757,767 Airbus 300-600,319,320.321 etc use a combination of the wheel rotation speed and inertial referance ground speed with the aircraft mass being fed from the flight management computer and a selector for the flight crew to select a level of autobraking depending on the length of the runway and conditions etc they can also select a mode called RTO (rejected take off) whereby as soon as the crew decide to abort the take off and select reverse thrust on the engines the system applies full pressure to the brakes for maximum retardation.

Aye, it's a bit quiet, but I'm not getting paid (it's the folks' place) so I'll stand that.

Keeping myself busy though - I'm planning out putting a new roof on the bog at the minute.

Mclovin my tolerances are ridiculous! What do you have to work within?

they differ from job to job and they depend on what your trying to tie into what. for the most part the bore size tends to be tied up to within a couple of microns, angles to within a couple of minutes and the rads have to be perfectly formed in both shape and size, finish and ovality need to be bang on too. just to add to that we have to use machines that our boss built as some failed money making scheme and are fucking shit, sometimes i wonder how we even manage to get shit right with the tools we have, must just be a testament to how skilled we are :lol:

carbide is pretty fucking hard but some of the jobs need to have a finish on them a scene queen would shit a brick at :lol:

kind of - i actually still make a few maxarets for the old hawker siddeley 125! it was the first ever antilocking brake system ever used on cars! it uses small clutch pads and a flywheel which uses the spinning enertia to open the valve and bleed off the pressure until the wheel starts to spin again where it closes it! really impressive how it works for how old the design is!. The later boeing and airbus stuff is a bit more complicated and uses more servo operated brake control systems- but your right in what your saying- the main braking system computer takes all the information relevant to it and calculates the braking accordingly.

Oh and i dont think they select RTO - pilots will slam the anchors on and full pressure is applied to the brakes.

A few years ago i worked with a dynamometer testing aircraft brakes and was lucky enough to see the Co developed Dunlop/Honeywell A380 main landing gear wheel and brake go through its RTO qualification test- its amazing how they can stop so much in a reletively small space of time! granted everything and i mean everything was ablaze but it stopped!

:lol: Fair enough bud! Your bore tolerances are about the same as mine,haha I'm kinda lucky my boss got a few new machines, the rest are like 1960s haha and have back lash like no means, tables are all fucked as are gibs and so are chucks on the manual mills haha

Just had a quick look on the careers site, there's LOADS of jobs going but the nearest one to me is 70+ miles. :shock:

Well i can't take photos and need to be careful with up to date details even vague, as i said earlier on in the topic. But i'm feeling a bit mean and left out so.. i run and maintain machines like these (plastic moulding processes). These are examples from the net, so it shows it all the same without giving away current politics/projects etc.

You tube link is a company video of a machine very similar if a bit small, going through the injection process, though ours are a different make and bigger. That one is using a single cavity mould at the time, making one object per cycle (car dashboard). The direct photo link is a photo of a 216 cavity mould for preformed containers - and is as tall as me, considerably wider, and the weight of a small truck. This makes 216 mouldings per shot, and can make them in around 20 seconds (this far closer to what i use). The preforms look like test tubes/dildos and are blown into full size bottles at a later date.

As for the workshops, once you've seen one you've seen them all, only we've gone for the hospital look instead of the old school dungeons..

I do internal grinding/polishing mostly for the canning industry (punches and dies)

i work at a sheet metal engineering plant and operate a Trumpf Trumatic 2020, seen you make punches and dies so thought id comment lol wonderful machinery.

Just started a new job part-time along side of my degree.

I'm creating adverts for Google, creating eBay stores, and doing some web and graphic design. Not going to put a photo up cause I'm pretty sure you all know what a computer at a desk with a very comfy chair looks like.

i did the level 3 national diploma in electrical and electronic engineering at college for two years, then got an apprenticeship where i have to do level 2 :roll:

i calibrate electronic temperature controllers and things and also various electronic and electrical stuffs for a small company based in the peak district but i drive all over the place in my four speed :lol:

i always struggle to explain my job...

it does rack up a few miles for a 21 year 4 old speed! and its not too difficult haha

ermmm probably not for my age as its kinda an apprenticeship still, got a raise last month and I'm on about £1k a month now + what they owe me for fuel/driving costs (about £130 give or take in an average month) and i probably do 1k miles a month too :lol:
