Realistic weight of early polos . . . .

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

I've been looking at the specs of the early Polos online and they list the weights as follows . .

Mk1 - 685kg

Mk2 - 720kg

Mk3 - 830kg

What I'm wanting to know is, what kind of realistic weights would I be looking at for stripped out versions of the above cars? ie perpex windows, sound deadening removed, excess wiring and metal from doors removed. Going to build a track car but is it worthwhile holding out to find a decent MK1 and strip that or will I see good weight losses from a Mk2 or Mk3 shell which are obviously easier to find.

depends what lengths your gonna go to stripping wise. i see no reason why you couldnt get a mk2 under 700kgs and a mk3 close to or in the 700s

Remember that the different body shapes weigh different amounts. Coupe's are meant to be heaviest, then breadies, then saloons. So I'm told, never verified this though.

surely a saloon would be heaviest, as there longer, have longer bumpers and have the metal part going across behind the rear seats?

woulda thought breaddies would be heavier than coupes too due to the shape?

I'd have thought the same, but all the literature I've ever seen says different.

I've always assumed with breadies vs coupe it's down to the weight of the C-pillar, and the fact weight wise there's nothing to a bready tailgate. Can never figure out why a saloon should be lighter though?

dunno mate, tis wierd. I'm gonna weigh mine soon, theres a place i can take it not far from me, so when i do ill post up the result

Yeh that doesnt seem to add up, loons have the heavier C pillar design and all the extra metal for the boot. If it wasnt a mk1 then I was gonna go fir a bready as I thougbt they wefe the lightest models but aldo mihht lose a bit more weight when swapping out the rear windows for perspex ones.

Dont mind going to town with a holesaw and grinder to shed as much weight as possible.

I can't remember which is lightest out of the breadvan or saloon, but they're both lighter than the coupe. Anyone who's carried a coupe tailgate knows they aint light.

Then there's the frame in the shell, which is the biggest.

There are other factors for VW's figures, i read somewhere some coupes first had bigger CV joints than breadvans but i've never seen evidence. Spec is another thing too, as they had bolstered seats, i dunno, there were so many variables from one year to another.

I had my coupe down to 695 at one point, but that was with an ally cylinder block. One thing i know, you don't want a sunroof.

Doors are heavy, but otherwise i'm not convinced by fibreglass outer panelwork. Dunno if i'd like fibreglass doors anyway. Bonnet, perhaps. But you'll save more weight with an alloy spare wheel - my steelies are well heavy, clear the VWII's by literally a millimeter thanks to being a full 5mm thick! No need!

Later facelift cars had side impact bars, it's not like they're lead but next to the difference between a fibre skin and steel skin of a door, their omission is a considerably cheaper way of saving weight.

Does philJ not do firbe glass doors? Mk3 doors are pretty heavy to be fair, much heavier than i though they would be.

Especially with the noise you make after shutting them

do they sound just like a golf?

I dunno, i've taken the sandbags/tar mat out the floor and it's a non-sunroof, i'm seriously considering a huge can of tyre weld now i work in the same town. But i don't know if i can be arsed to go further.

It's an early non-sunroof but still i figure a good 730kgs now. 5-speed gearbox, AVY lump, rear seats/belts, rear wiper, spot lamps, basic stereo, vented discs and 200mm drums, multi rear ARB's.. These are things i want and they're worth their weight to me.

So it's certainly a matter of choice. Personal weight is another thing entirely, i'm ten stone so that's the weight of a 1.0 6n engine lighter than some of my mates!

And if you rarely venture out of town, it's pointless carrying a full tank of fuel. Unless of course, the government are skint..

I can't remember how old i am, think i'm 38, point is that despite being 5'11 last year was the first year i ever hit ten stone.

It's not that i didn't eat all the pies, but i'm celiac, so the more pies and cakes i eat, and more beer i drink, the thinner i get. :)

Damn you! I wish i could eat loads of pies and drink loads of beer without getting fatter!

My Blue polo is a coupe, MK3, with side impact bars, (will have alot of stereo), more sound deadening, loads of OEM accesories, and my 12 stone! And its only a 1.0l  It doesnt have a sunroof though :-)

It's not so great, i'm now avoiding gluten because it's slimming process isn't doing me any good, it makes me thin because it damages me and so my body rejects it - and all the other nutrients are rejected with it. This damage leaves me at a high risk of bowel cancer as well as merely starving me.

So basically, i'm 'allergic' to beer, all take away food, any form of bread/pasta/pastry/biscuit, in fact pretty much everything. From gravy to baked beans, you name it there's wheat/barley/malt in it.

Cider, real meat, dairy and vegetables is about it for me, strictly speaking. :retard:

But of course, i do compromise a bit, so i'm not gonna get lardy anytime soon..

nowt wrong with cider.

Unless you are a veggie

Well this got off topic. I have ankylosing spondalitis. And thats not made up, despite the name

The point is, that gluten makes me thin but makes 99.9% of people fat. That's you.

Bread, pasta, biscuits, pastries.. Beef burgers don't make you fat. Nor do sausages. Or chicken, unless it'r covered in batter, as that's made of wheat. The bun or roll they're served in, wheat, makes you fat. Anything resembling bread is what makes you weigh your car down. It's such slow release energy you can't burn it, so your body stores it.

Bitches love the shit. Toast, mainly. Sandwiches. Rolls. Take away. That's why they're all battling the fat arse, because they eat wheat for breakfast/dinner/tea.

So, this has me conclude that fat bitches slow you down more than steel.

Football, then..

fattys unite!

This is me, oxygen makes me fat! this is why i need to make my car lighter

protein, tnt diet ;)

What you need then is an AFH engine but one with an ally cylinder block. I just happen to know someone who can supply one - can't be missed, bargain £400 :-D

Sorry. This is an incorrect statement. I know this isn't a nutrition or health forum, but as a nutritionist, its my duty to dispell such misconceptions. However, it is an easy misconception.
