mk4/ 6n front hubs on a mk2?

Featured Replies

hi all just wondering if anyone has done this?

as far as i know mk2 bottom ball joints are 17mmm on a 6n there 15mm so the bottom could be drilled out to 17. the upper mounting's are 25mm on a 6n and 20mm on a mk1 golf so options are to either use mk1 golf coilovers and skim the 6n hubs down to 20mm or run 6n coilovers.

I'm defiantly going to fit 6n hubs for my next adventure with the mk2, i don't really want to say why but i do need them.

so do i order mk1 golf coilovers and skim the hub or 6n ones? from reading threw hear golf coilovers sit very low on a mk2 witch i don't mind on the front but mine being a bready with 7j wheels the rear become's a problem, would they sit too low on the rear or should i get 6n ones. would they sit higher?

what about upper mounting with mk1 golf coilovers you need mk2 golf top bearings in mk2 polo strut tops? so with 6n coilovers would this be the same or would this save having to source the bearings?

also have i missed anything out? as far as I'm aware driveshafts fit and brakes would swap over? there 16v hubs so what size brakes do they run as atm mine are 239 vented to fit under the 13's.

all will become clear once I've done this and there will be a full write up with piccy's but i don't want to say exactly what I'm doing till I've done it as i don't think anyone else has done what I'm planning yet and don't want to be beaten to it ha ha.

thanks in advance for any info :-D

Looking forward to seeing you get to the point where you realise the only real problem here is connecting the steering arms..

weld the steering arms on like the mk1 golf conversions.

6n rear coilies are super low aswell, I'm using them on mine. also they are proper stiff

at a guess could he be wanting to run 6n air ride on his polo thats my guess

and yes he would have to weld the steering arms to which ever coilovers he uses

the problem i see is when he drills out the bottom of the hub from 15mm to 17mm it will also alter how the bolt that is meant to lock the ball joint in will sit

if you understand what i mean as the cross hole is obviously drilled in the right place for 15mm ball joints if you then use 17mm ball joints the standard bolt maybe too thick to fit so you could use a thinner bolt but will this be enough ie strong enough and lock the joint in properly as if not your ball joints will constantly be popping out which is unsafe and dangerous

probably alot more problems too otherwise someone else would have done it like youngprodigys and that could be the main reasons he used the mk1 golf hubs instead

theres also the mounting bolt distance on the hubs as well as different hubs use different distances between the bolts that hold the coilies to the hubs so you may have to get the matching coilies to the hubs

just my input and trying to help could be a costly mistake if you buy everything and it doesnt work

my opinion is i would bother with the 16v hubs just find the mk1 golf ones that do work

yes i am aware of having to weld the stering arms on to the coilovers themselves.

ahh good point pete i know what your saying about the pinch bolt not lineing up with the grove in the ball joint anymore and haddnt thought of this. unless the hole is drilled ofset to the hole not just making it a bigger diamiter all round but more say at just the back to keep the same spacing at the front. thanks for that thats realy usefull advice there!

ahh so 6n coilies are super low too, well i might aswell buy some mk1 coilovers then and if plans change i can just bolt them on my golf insted.

i shall have to go measure the bolt spacing on the 16v and the golf to see if there differnt too.

I'm swaying towards the golf coilovers now then and just machening down the mounting to 20mm atleast i know eveything above has been tryed and tested.

i have golf hubs already for the conversion but in a week or so I'm breaking a 16v so wanted to make use of the hubs. its not air ride I'm after but good guess.

also 6n rear drums stub axles and backing plates will fit on my rear beam wont they I'm pritty sure they do but no harm in double cheacking.

thanks again :-D

yeah the rear drum stub axles are the same 4 bolt pattern and if you want to sell the golf hubs i will buy them mate as just found out one of my spares that il be using for the rwd is bent so need to source at least another one to replace this

and glad i could help also wouldnt machining the hub thickness down weaken it i know its only 5mm or 2.5mm either side but you never know lol especially what voids and air pockets are hidden within

would be good to see if they can be used though

cool thanks for that info pete. not sure if il them or not yet but il bear it in mind if i dont use them.

rwd tell more, build tread?

I'm thinking that 5mm wouldent be too much but yes if threre cast then presumably filled with holes and voids of air il ask at the local enginers next to my work to see if they think it would be a problem, i cant myself but then again i dont work in that field. if it was for rallying then yes wouldent even think of it but i dout they would get that much abuse on road?
