Front camber angles

Featured Replies

hi all first post on here:

got a 1.4 8v 6n having problems with excessive tyre wear, its been lowered on coilovers (phil j budget)currently wound down all the way. Even when they are at a more usable ride height my tires are lasting around 3-5k miles. Had 4 wheel laser tracking done and they said 'there is not camber adjustment on the polo and there is no way to track a the non standard car' i have a print out sheet which says left front toe is at -0.02 and front right is at 0.00 degrees so toe cant be the problem, camber on the other hand is at 2.19 front left and 1.15 degrees front right. My question to you all is what should the camber angle be when its lowered around 80-100mm and how do i adust it. Thanks

Yeahh, use rim not tyre! :) Also, if they adjust toe make sure they adjust both sides not just one, that's just crude - unless of course only 1 side needs it! You could also check your steering

Ball Joint... Where it connects to the wishbone

It can be adjusted for camber..

It is adjustable! in two places on a 6n.

The two bolts that hold the damper to the knuckle have movement in them to adjust camber, and the 3 bolts that hold the ball joint into the lower arm are slotted and give a small amount of adjustment.

I set my ball joints fully out on the slots, and adjusted camber on the upper bolts as then the wheel to subframe is equidistant.

I think I have 2 minutes toe in either side. And -2.5 deg camber and doesn't seem to scrub tyres.

I also got my caster as equal as i could by moving the subframe, you can also adjust camber in a way by moving the subframe, for example if you moved it to one side on yours, it would increase the camber one side, and decrease the other. But there isn't much movement on the frame

I had the same problem with the gf's not long bk a mate of mine works on vw's a lot and he said if u lossen the 2 18mm bolts at the bottom of the suspension and pull the entire leg towards the disc and tighten them bk up it should sort it out

sounds like you took your car to kwik fit.. bad move! lol

As you have not put a minus sign by your cambers, does that mean its positive camber?

As said above; the two 18mm's will adjust it, slacken them slightly, push the top of hub inwards to make it negative, pull it towards you for positive.

If you have a level driveway, you could use a steel straight edge vertically on your rim, with a spirit level app on a smart phone to measure it - this may sound crude, but you have your current measurements so you could calculate the difference of measurement and compensate.

You can then work out what you need to change, jack it up, remove wheel, adjust it, tighten up, fit wheel and drop jack; roll the car back and forth to the place you measured initially, leave the handbrake off and measure the camber again, it's a bit trial and error until its right, and tedious but it will be pretty close.

Tbh if you have no issues with scrubbing ( ie not needing camber for clearance) I'd set it around -0.5 degrees, but setting it at -1 deg would be ok IMO. Depends how you drive and such.

I'd also get the toe set again after adjusting camber.

I say roll it to the same point on the ground as there's no variance in level etc.

Also rolling it back and forth should settle the bushes and springs and being jacked up, and leaving handbrake off prevents a possible ride height change occurring when it locks the drum, and should reduce sticktion in the car & bushes

That's how I do mine, only I can't afford an iPhone, so I had to make do with a normal spirit level

Bear in mind to put the level across a level face of the wheel, not the tyre, as the tyre will always be bulged at the bottom to some extent.

Then take it back to kwik shit for a free alignment check and tell them to lick your balls when you've got it right.

Also, if they adjust toe make sure they adjust both sides not just one, that's just crude - unless of course only 1 side needs it!

You could also check your steering wheel is central to the rack (ie on the right spline) depends how precise you wanna be.

You can do this by:

Put a marker, or strip of tape on the centre of the dash above clocks

Turn full left lock, mark, or put a bit of tape on the steering wheel, inline with the mark on dash

Repeat this for right hand lock.

Turn the wheel straight ahead, the tape should be equal at the bottom of wheel, if it's out, turn the wheel so the two bits of tape on wheel are level, then remove wheel; ensuring column doesn't twist, and refit wheel straight.

Repeat process and tape should be equal distances apart and level.

Bit awkward to explain

just to chuck in another quick question, what is "toe"?

i need to sort out my camber soon and all this has been sweeeet.

Luke

Erm, basically, your wheels point straight ahead yeah?

So, say you turn right a bit, the right hand front wheel (sitting in car) would be towing out. The left would be towing in.

When you set the "toe" youre setting these straight ahead when the steering is straight.

Although manufacturers set slight toe in/out (toe in, both wheels would be slightly pointed in at the front) due to flex in suspension and such.

Google it, or maybe even youtube, maybe a good explanation :)

that what i assumed but wasn't sure! my rears are like it but the fronts are fine.

cheers guys.

you sure? the body shape gives that illusion

nah definitely is, it's very noticeable on the right hand side, left ain't to bad.

cheers guys never will set about doing it tomorrow :) , and yes harris it is negative camber the insides of the tyres are completely smooth, nearly at canvas. Where i live, milton keynes, there are 56473632 rounder bouts so tyre wear is a problem for a lot of people let alone the dubs well incorrectly set up ones like mine :?

I wanna know who did your 4 wheel alignment ! The guy that did mine, set up my tracking and adjusted my camber, also told me what to do about adjusting my camber and toe on the rear ! All for £35 !

A local place they had all the gear but just said there was no adjustment for camber :? . should i have some toe in to help reduce the tyre wear?
