Hi all,

Whilst driving today, I went over a speed bump and then all of a sudden the power steering switched off ABS, engine management, steering and airbag light all came on! The car runs like normal.

I did a scan, cleaned all the earth points I can see (battery, and 2 by the suspension turret), checked the fuses but still no luck.

I cannot communicate with either ABS or airbag module.

After further investigation I discovered that if i disconnect the right bulkhead multi connector (behind the wiper motor), the instrument cluster illumination lights stop flickering and I get the clicking back from the cluster for the indicators!! I am then able to communicate with the airbag controller but not with the engine ecu anymore, until i reconnect the bulkhead connector.

Could this mean there's a short on the CAN in the engine bay?

I am so confused!! Any help would be really appreciated!!

As your problems started after going over a bump in the road, I would suggest that you check the little metal links near the fuses. These can corrode and leave you with an open circuit, or worse (from a fault finding point of view,) an intermittent open circuit. The best way to check these, is to remove them and inspect them, as whilst they are in place, they can appear in tact.

If you find a faulty link, do fit the correct replacement, as these things are actually big fuses and making a 'better' one rather defeats the object!

If you do find that this is the problem, you will also have to clear all of those fault codes and see how things go after that.

Also worth checking the battery connections, especially where the distribution block connects to the post. This happened to mine and I ended up spending hundreds on replacing parts and hours of head scratching only to find that the threaded section had stripped off by the vibration of the engine.
