Bike carbs and emissions

Featured Replies

Hey.

Am having a right game tryin to get carbs near to stoich as possible for emissions test.

Have tried needles, mains, emulsion tubes. Secondary airs blanked, mix screws.

Basically, driving along it's fine & runs well.

I can set it to idle at 14.7 fairly easily just tweakin air screws. But if you hold it at 2.5-3k, it's running like 12.5:1.

The only way I can get this better (like 13.8:1) is by screwing mixture screws fully in, then idle is like 19:1 and won't tick over and is just a stupid idea.

Driving along, light throttle at 2-3k it runs like 15:1 which is fine, jus no load holding it at revs it seems to go rich as fuck, needles can't go any lower.

It's annoying, its fine driving along but just goes rich at this point where they test it!

Any ideas, other than mine of setting the car on fire

Fit fuel injection for MOT?

hmmm sounds abit trickey... if its fine when driving about then leave it alone, save melting pistons and whatnot.

why not just tune it to the 13.8 setting and increase the idle stop to get it to idle. then change it back once its through the mot :) i do this with my civic to get through emmissions

ideally you want a set of needles that taper differently.

or you could try shaving abit of material off the inside of the slides (where the needles sit) to get the needles to sit abit lower? not sure how you'd go about that tho xD

haha I have considered injection tbh but would rather not!

have fucked around more & achieved nothing haha, I'll just put it in and see :)

Friendly MOT.

camber shims will sort this.

Lunchtime MOT's ... blind bob putting it in the wrong tailpipe .. oh dear

How can you be such hard work with these carbs! Was the bike they're from thrown from a cliff and then burnt out, or something?

When i fitted a set to an AEE, i didn't know where they came from, they'd been on a shelf in a bike breakers and the bloke wasn't even sure if it was a 600cc or 900cc version. All i knew is i had to clean the sand out of them... I knew nothing about their history, or how to go about fitting them. Bogg Bro's suggested drilling the jets to 1.65 or 1.70 but the nearest i had was 1.55 so that it was.

The manifold was made of used poly tubing from the skip at work, strapped on with Jubilee clips, and i just slapped the dizzy straight on with no vac, modification or timing light. Just turned it until the engine sounded well, and the idle was just over 1K.

It absolutely flew, sounded amazing, and sailed through the MoT cleaner than cars a fraction of it's age. I figured this meant it was lean, especially as it was more economical than it had been as a 1.3 pierburg. And with thousands of miles of being thrashed, this became evident with the condition of the plugs - when i eventually got around to taking the head off, i could eat my dinner off the pistons.

The ABD was only slightly slower, a sweeter engine which was even cleaner through the MoT - the tester couldn't believe his eyes, and i had almost Bluemotion economy. Same dizzy, never touched it, hardly touched the carbs either. Both were stock engines and both were utterly reliable (gearboxes aside).

I recon i come across as big headed and like i'm trying to make you look stupid, i hope not. I didn't really know what i was doing back then, and i feel for you because you've put so much effort in and it sounds like a nightmare. It's bizarre. When i first reported what i'd done on here, i advised someone called Joel how to do it to his red breadvan. He threw it together in a weekend, put it on the rollers and it showed 106bhp before he even started tinkering. Beer money build with a stock engine, he didn't even invest in a 5-speed box for it.

So do i have any ideas as to what's gone wrong? Well, i did say from the start i wasn't convinced by running a wild cam, as it's a long stroke engine with a small head and that could give you a tricky natural torque curve to cater for. And such cams can run lumpy low down, with bad idle. I've never considered running one.

But then you've made a lot of changes to the carbs, i don't know what you've done? I'd struggle to get mine back to how they were though.. Anyway, otherwise, no. I recon in your position i'd try factory 6n 1.6 and 1.4 cams even just to compare, but you've already turned down suggestions to run a factory cam.

I think ultimately you need to hand it to someone at a particular RR who really knows their shit with bike carbs - they are out there, although i don't know of anyone myself. Bear in mind though, they tend to tune for performance (sounds obvious, but i've always gone for economy).

I dont know what else to advise now, i do think the cam has made it hard for you but with it performing well now you're too close to change that. If it is that, when you crack it then you will be the clubpolo bike carb master!

Big difference here is Nick's car has to pass a catalyst emissions test where AFR is monitored as part of the test, whereas yours doesn't Mikey. You only have to worry about CO and HC with much more generous limits.

The catalyst emissions test is designed to check to see if the EFI system and catalyst are operating correctly, so doesn't necessarily follow that it's easy to get a car with a set of carbs on it to pass. Bikes don't have to meet the same limits...

Mikey- you got a printout of your MOT results, I'd be interested to see them with such a high CR that you claim.

Also you say it's been 'easy' for you, but haven't you melted a piston? Probably something to do with the lean running like you mentioned...

Bluemotion economy, 120mph trap at the 1/4 AND emissions of a modern car- you should do this for a job :-)

Also, to add something constructive, Nick I would leave the fueling alone at lambda 1, if you've got a cat fitted this will make very little difference to HC or CO above lambda=1 anyway.

If you've not got a cat fitted, then slightly leaner than lambda=1 will give benefits to HC & CO, but NOX will go through the roof (not that you're arsed).

Disconnect any crankcase venting back to the inlet (this should be an MOT fail if it's open to atmosphere though), also I'd try retarding your base timing slightly, there's a chance you've got it too far advanced, which won't help.

It may be easier to fit the stock efi back on for the MOT, then take it off again and re-fit your carbs, especially if you've paid dyno time to have them setup.

do you reckon fitting a filter onto the crankcase venting would be MOT worthy yoof or a pikey catch tank?

The thing is, I can change things massively (like 15 main jet sizes diff) and the difference is barely noted, tbh mikey I think yours was a bit lean. But I also think NA engines are very forgiving with having stuff set wrongly.

I honestly don't know - we're forgetting I smoothed all the head myself etc.

I had the dizzy reprofiled, fitted it back on @ 6 deg base timing, and it was absolutely shocking, even at 10 it was pretty flat, I have like 16 degrees timing now : s

I kinda Aim for 13:1 AFR under flat out abuse, which tbh is probably too rich in reality.

Fuck knows tbh! Maybe I'm expecting a lot from a 1.6 8v in a heavier car than you had mikey

And tbh it doesn't run lumpy at idle at all, actually tempted to try standard cam.

IMO Iv tried to get power from a naturally torquey engine, saying that the other two ones of similar spec seem a lot better.

Tell you what, once I get MOT out the way, I'm gonna fit my other gearbox, some slightly smaller mains as its a touch rich, then see how it is at pod next weekend.

I'm gonna ignore rolling roads, other peoples figures and just try to enjoy it for what it is, tbh I want another car now anyway but that's another story.

Saying that. Same time 1/4 mile as an AFH'd mk2 can't be so slow? :s

I suppose i'm going to have to correct your fabrication and fill in the gaps, else i kinda give permission to be painted..

Didn't we already answer the economy thing a while back, when people forgot the claim was of a 1.4 8v with long gearing in a car weighing 710kgs..? Maybe i confuse someone else. Andy, probably.

Interesting how i've ever managed 120mph quarters with said engine though, i suppose that's more of your presumptious heckling to compliment guessing why i melted a piston? Not that you're far wrong - even if only on one faulty carb, when the other three were spot on.

I'm not even gonna entertain it any further, however talented i may be i don't have quite the pod-kudos of yours truly, especially as i've never ran the quarter in any car.

But i'm hoping to get an MoT on it in the next couple of weeks, i'm happy to show a printout when i do, so you'll at least get your wish there.

I'll put my emissions results up later, shall be comical :)

Bullshit baffles brains Mikey- all your unsubstantiated claims over the years are amusing, general lack of anything tangible to show the Polo world but the ability to preach to everyone on how great you, your ability, and your car is. And how everyone else seems to be doing things wrong, including OEMs...

I remember when you said you'd be most upset to not hit 120mph at the end of the 1/4, or when you blasted that RS4 through Milton Keynes, or the various bollocks spewed about mpg figures- I see you've still not taken Andy up on his offer to pay for your fuel whilst you prove bluemotion esque figures??

What is sad, is those who have tried to follow in your footsteps after reading about said car (and it is a nice car) but seem to be dissapointed with 'real world' results?

Emissions data would be good, power curves good, any actual data good- helps lots of people to learn and to realise the facts behind said stories and see where they have a problem, instead of you constantly saying 'it was easy for me, I bolted it on'...

Much love x

I'm not really biased here, I don't doubt Mikeys ability but I havnt saw anything to prove anything is true, don't doubt ability as a lot of things with cars is common sense, anything in a mk2 feels fast cause they weigh about as much as my left shoe.

Iv ran my car flat out several times, leaner than 15:1 and nothing's melted, so it must have been pretty fucking lean to melt a piston, which if it's that lean it would explain excellent mpg, but also reading you don't keep a full tank of fuel for economy, I guess you drive very economically, whereas I must hit the limiter at least 3 times on an average journey haha

  • Author

That's probably a lie, is probs more. I'm constantly assessing my fuelling and performance, haha, BWARPPPP

  • Author

It's the worse thing, on lanes when you're excited, then BANG BANG BOOM SCRAPE, and I'm nowhere near as low as you ;)

I lost my faith in the bike-carb-game, cause it dontt, stop fuellingg (8)

Wow. You have a very selective memory and you put it all together in a manner which exposes a pattern of attitude i don't really need to answer.

Still, Milton Keynes is hardly a continent, but it's bigger than the 8th of a mile sprint away from a roundabout that i claimed at the time. Sorry, but some random accusation that i raced someone in another quick car across a city is a bit strong. Comparing in-gear acceleration in a momentary burst getting up to speed on a bypass is kinda different in my eyes. I guess that's just opinion, though.

I don't remember anyone ever offering me any petrol to prove anything? But hey, i'd love a free tank of fuel for a tour around the country! Paypal will be fine.

Not that i'll get Bluemotion economy with a 1.6 16v, and not that i ever claimed to, so we're kinda stuck with that one.

I know how you get confused easily, so we're cool, but there's one thing you claim that really isn't fair.

I have regularly reminded people that i'm not out to pay fortunes for RR and pod runs in order to prove anything. But still, some take my advice.

And when they do, i help those people on here, every day if need, i keep with them until the end.

Just in this topic i've said this is an unusual case, and how others have succeeded and found it as easy as me with simple instructions. Joel was an example i gave what, yesterday? And he did prove his success on here with paperwork, and it was nice to get thanks. As i've had with others. I hardly coax others to mess up and then laugh at them for it now, do i. Despite the long painful process this poor bloke 'Harris Racing' has been having for months i'm still trying to work out what 's going on for him. Hence being in this thread in the first place.

I could claim it's all been hard for me and i'm some post of genius mastermind - but no, truth is i'm not that gifted.

Maybe you're just bitter i don't bother with G40's..? Well they don't need me when you're there for them..

Love you!

haha, I love how people will search for things in future and just reveal everyone constantly chatting shit on here instead of anything useful! :)

Haha.

Btw yoof. I'm gonna beat you at the track day thingy, even at pod if you like, you know naffinnnnnn.

I love a reaction ;)
